not the centering but the widening. Some have concerns that 8" or wider rims cause premature bearing wear. While I have had my 8" rims for almost 5 years I have never had any bearing or drive train related problems with regards to the wider rims. I have had issues with tires rubbing shock mounts, body, and gas tank splash guard, but these are minor.
The centering of the hole would just eliminate the need for the balance plate and the hassle of explaining to the tire shops that they need to use it. Not all wheels are off center but a few are and they can be off by a decent amount.

AH... well that's also a good answer to my question about machining the center holes rather than using the adapter to balance. maybe some 8" rims with a real center hole would be a good project, right after i get an aluminum roof on it and right after the carbs are running right again....and it gets smogged...
