Pinzgauer Development

Post by Erik712m »

With all the drama going on in the classified section (omigod I broke a nail  ). I thought I would ask, so every one might get an Idea on just how little development or past development is still being produced. Just so you guys might get an idea. When I bought my pinz the suppliers were selling after market hard tops and pimped rims :D. Calling around to the suppliers it seems that the pinz has gone to repair mode only with no real after market accessories. Looking back thru history (the forum Dave Dunn posted) there's alot of stuff that could have been fun to try out if i would have been around back in Milez and Dave's era. So can you guy's post any new stuff or old still being offered?

Well there's always the ignition / engine upgrades, monster lighting, brush guards, storage & overhead compartments, seating, winches, GPS, wheels - as you mentioned, oversized fuel tanks, rerouted exhaust systems, aftermarket a/c kits and of course your friend Andre's VERY cool roof racks (which I plan to pull the trigger on shortly).

What else is there?

That is very easy, dig out $1000-$1500 and get one made.

tank

Post by ka »

i figured it would cost, but does anyone have a good lead to a good tank fabricator?

i'm also considering buying another pinz tank, cutting them up, cleaning out the red poison and welding them together.

I bet Andre could build you a custom over sized gas tank.

True and not true in high school I inherited a 56 ford merc I had five or six catalogs I could order from. High production run vehicles have more after market add ons available than lower production run vehicles. A 1955 356 Porsche has tons of stuff available if you wanted to make the mistake and not keep it factory.
monster lighting, brush guards, storage & overhead compartments, seating, winches, GPS, wheels — as you mentioned, oversized fuel tanks, aftermarket a/c kit.
None of these are bolt on after market accessories. My point was if you see something for sale that you would like to have would be wise to buy it as it may not be offered later. Jim I imagine Your EFi kit is the same scenario?

Ka, At one point in time, I wanted a larger gas tank until two wiser than I pinz owners gave me the scenario if the gas tank develops a leak you have lost all that gas and the larger tank took the place of the spare tank mount. You can easy enough use the spare tank to get you home in a jam by removing the hose from the tank and routing it to the spare. Now I'm have Andre work on making more spare tank mounts.

eric - tank size: yeah, redundancy is good but the inconvenience would get to me after a short time. i really never do hard wheeling anymore but a pinz, upgraded, is really nice to drive. i'm thinking 30 gallons would be about right. i guess i could even get fancy with the design and make is self protecting, lke a titanic hull. that's one thing ive been looking for: the drawings for that tank. fact... i'll start a new thread on that...

Tank protection...

Post by PinzAir »

I know this isn't adding size to your existing tank... but if your looking for some tank armor. I'd look into the armor built by Tim with the Southwest Pinzgauer Assocation. (there is a thread on their fourm under the classified section) There are a number of trucks in the club that are running his armor, and they look pretty stout.

There's a website with a guy selling "bulletproof" gas tanks. He has a video shooting some metal plate. Aaarrgghh, can't find it at the moment.

No longer in business, Mike I think has that tank on his 712. He made one later on with the armer inside the tank real clean looking. Another example of my point for making this tread .

I have the larger armored tank from Pinzparts on my 712 and while the exo cage protection bothered me at first it has grown on me.
On my 710 I chose to armor the gas tank and leave the jerry can where it was. I have a real rear bumper combination tire carrier and dual jerry can holder on the back of my 710. This set up has never left me feeling the need to carry more fuel. In fact I carry water on the rear carrier more often than fuel, we do live in the desert. The added weight of the rear setup has worked out well.
As was mentioned before Tim (swpa website classified section) is making a bunch of different armor and miscellaneous items and is willing to fab up just about anything needed. As he is not one of the hard core pinz people he will make the items to your specifications.

Lots of great ideas have come out of some of the new guys (past two years or so). Seems their imagination is not smothered by some of the older pinz crowd.
