That plane was on a Wings of the Soviet Union episode. It didn't fly so much as use surface effect to skim above the water if I recall correctly. Could lift heavy loads.
I like the layout/look of the 8 wheel vehicle even if it does have a flat bottom (bad for mines). Looks quite capable.

If you didn't get stuck, you didn't try hard enough.

Some research tells me that the 8x8 is a Russian BTR-90 varitant (BTR= Armored Personel Carrier). The windows indicate it is an air control command vehicle. The 90 version has the door between the 2nd and third axels on the right side.
There are some youtube videos of similar amphibious ones running around, seems they are still used by the Russians.

The Russians seem to like to modify/pimp out various military vehicles. There are some Russian web sites showing amazing things with Pinzgauers, but see what they did with an APC:

It's a BRDM-2. I used to hang around army garages when I was a kid and it actually looked much better without all that pimping crap, just my opinion, very capable offroad/recon truck not as cool as BMP2 http://www.rusarmy.com/uk/photo/armor/b ... o_mps1.htm
but then it is a tracked apc, so not a very fair comparison.
