Carb Base Sealant
Carb Base Sealant
I pulled the carbs off for a reubild, and noticed there was some red sticky residue on the thick base plate gasket between carb and intake manifold. I didn't see any reference in the manual for sealant on this gasket. Should I use some kind of sealant when I reassemble the thing and if so what type?
Thanks,

Re: Carb Base Sealant
I use Hylomar blue in a very thin film - don't want it to squidge into the engine.

Re: Carb Base Sealant
No sealant is used or should be used anywhere on the carbs or mounting gaskets.
Re: Carb Base Sealant
Would you advise against copper-spraying the paper gaskets ahead of time and letting them dry before install?

Just wet the gaskets with fuel or brake cleaner before installing.

Re: Carb Base Sealant
It is very simple. A, the factory used no sealant. B, Fuel dissolves sealants and then wicking occurs as the sealant is replaced by fuel, and C, why would you need sealant if you followed service manual directions and made sure all the mating surfaces were clean and flat?

Re: Carb Base Sealant
Guys:
I'm in the process of replacing my air intake exhaust manifold gaskets. What is the torque setting for the nuts holding the manifold down to the engine and what is the torque setting for the nuts holding the carbs to the manifold? I did a total disassembly to clean off 40 years of crap that had built up inside the engine tins. Figured I'd paint the tins while they are off. But, I wanted to make sure I tightened the manifold to the engine and the carbs to the manifold properly.
I looked in the manual and can't seem to find it. I saw general torque settings for "all other" nuts and bolts of various sizes, but not a 12 mm (I saw 6,8, and 10). I want to make sure I don't screw this up.
Thanks,
John

John
let me repeat my waring here
the torque specs are listed for the core diameter of the bolt, not the wrench size.!!!
let me give a waring example: 10 mm is specified for a torque of 46 Nm. here a hex head of 17 mm is used
wrench size 10, au contraire, is used on 6mm bolts, where 9,5 Nm are applicable
this confusion can lead to destructive forces ....
