Hey all,
Was thinking about putting a Red Dot low profile air con (http://www.cstk.com/productdetail.htm?productId=-2844) on a 712. Its a new product, and looks pretty nice. Low impact to the roof as well, in terms of height and area needed to cut. I know that some people have had success adding air con, and I was wondering if there's anything I need to know - specifically about mounting the air compressor. Is there space in the engine compartment for a compressor, using the double channel pulley? Does it signficantly diminish engine performance? Any helpful advice is greatly appreciated.

Re: air conditioning
I have done Red Dot a/c on both of my trucks,712 (see avitar) and Volvo. The Pinz, over 5 years,Volvo 2.They work well.Insulation is a must as is doing a hard top. Double pulley? On the engine or the compressor? I had to modify the original 1-groove pulley to accept additional belts. As I have stated in the past, you need more power, turn it off,but there is really no significant power loss. The comfort factor is greatly increased.I can give more info if you like, Wehrx3@live.com ,pm's are a bit of a hassel.

Re: air conditioning
I would be very interested in your progress on this unit and any details. The low profile looks indeed low impact to the roof.
I have seen a much larger Carrier Air V rooftop RV unit on a 712K nearby running from a 3500w inverter but don't know much about the details or issues with this install or performance.
But I do know it is pushing 100 degrees already

Re: air conditioning
Also interested in this project. I'm trying to figure out a way to add AC into my C304.

Re: air conditioning
I am also looking to add A/C to my 712. I was looking at the Red Dot one also , but I don't want to run it off the engine. I am planning on using a portable gen 3500 watt just getting ideals
Re: air conditioning
I am running with a 24V Red Dot unit running off the engine (2'nd pulley). The
output is in the ballpark of 17,000 BTU -- though I hardly ever use it.
To cool a Pinz, which is not all that "air tight" your going to need >15,000 BTU
to make a difference. So that's getting in the ballpark of 5,000 Watts, or 7 hp
as take-off on the main pulley. So your looking at 5% to 10% of a power Tax off
the engine to have better creature comfort, and that does not inc. the DC load
off the Alternator to run the blower, which is < 10A @ 24V, another 200W or so.
Bottom line, if your looking to power a A/C unit off of an Aux generator your
going to need a lot bigger unit, 5,000 W or greater. If your looking to add a
secondary pulley as a take-off (most practical approach IMHO), be prepared to
down shift on step grades a tad sooner
