my buddy used an escrow service until he developed a relationship with the person over seas. Now it is just a simple wire transfer.

Work with someone who has done this many times is the safest bet.

We just recently bought a Tgb11 from a reputable dealer in Sweden with a long history of honesty and integrity. We did a direct wire transfer from our checking account into his. No problems whatsoever.

Yeah get that guys name and hope for the best based on others experience.

There sometimes seems to be more scams than honest people out there, then you add to that all the other things that can go wrong... then add to that how certain US states treat non-US vehicles through the registration process. Sometimes it pays to buy one here already and sometimes you get (mostly) lucky.

There are less concerns when dealing with certain countries though. Sweden is certainly on that list.

Definitely get a feel for who you are getting the vehicle from through emails and pictures and conversations.

I made sure I spoke to the guy on the other end. I didn't get scammed but when I got my Volvo which had just be painted undercoated and a bunch of work done My guy decided since it was paid for and going over the pond he would take it on a good mudding adventure(does not make for an easy clearance at the port) the vehicle I had gotten pictures of all minty and new was caked in mud all over and had a smashed headlight and winch rope full of mud. It was minor but when you develop a relationship with the seller and trust and you can still get screwed. In going over things afterwards I also found out he charged a bunch extra on the shipping also. I had someone who could ship it for me but my seller who lived close to the port said he could get it done cheaper for me to save me money. It ended up I paid about double as shown on the shipping papers I got. I would have expected that from a dealer as or broker as that is their Business and I wouldn't have even noticed it had the truck come in the condition I saw it in the picture at the body shop. I also probably wouldn't of minded if he had told me he was going charge me bit for his time or something but he said told me he was trying to save me money which it ended up costing more.

So just remember this is a used car deal and just like here be wary it may go good it may go bad there are no guarantees but if your careful you won't end up scammed outof your money. Just look at one guy in Colorado who bought one of the GL 718s his truck's engine went on a low mileage vehicle so you just never know.

You are dropping some coin to buy a truck. Personally I would fly over inspect the truck, pay the guy and then personally deliver it to a port of shipping.
I sold the oldest Vw binz truck known to exist to a gent in Hamburg. For the life of me I could not understand how someone dropping that type of cash would not come and seal the deal in person.

I have purchased many of my vehicles and almost all my parts online but you really need to talk to the seller, get detailed pics and know what to look for. Pictures don't capture the real condition of a vehicle and obviously can't tell you how it is mechanically.
I try to buy from people that are active on forums etc as that can be a good place to learn about the person and history of the vehicle.
Scams are everywhere but I would not buy something overseas without using a recommended vendor to inspect the vehicle, provide video and photos of the parts sellers don't always show and to finalize the deal.
If I were you I would PM sixbennetts and see who he used, how he liked them and if all good contact them and do the deal through them. It will cost you more $ but otherwise you may as well take your money and go to a casino
Good luck and keep us posted - what are you looking at purchasing?

I dealt with a man that I met at MogFest for the purchase of a Mog. He was from Belgium and talked a great deal and the Mog was even supposed to be in Parumph, Nevada. Most of our dealings were over the internet after our initial meeting and therefore subject to internet fraud and theft as the Mog never materialized.
It was supposed to be shipped/delivered to me in San Diego. I even went to Nevada to find the guy and learned that he had returned to Belgium with my money never to return.

He still operates a business out of Europe and had the balls to contact me and ask for more money to complete the deal.

Be careful out there. Even the people you think are honest might not be. There were others that made deals with him for parts and items that were not delivered, but I had invested the most money so I guess
I would have won the prize for being the biggest fool of them all.

Try to deal with dealers that are known and those that are known to you.

EDIT: Just as a thought...the name he used at MogFest was....BART COPS watch out for this guy. The name of the last business I know of was MECARDIA E.U.

Lots of good comments here. I've been investigating dealers in The Netherlands, Belgium and Poland for the G-Wagen I'd like to acquire. My first thought is to find one of "us" from the forum who can be your eyes and ears on the ground to facilitate the transaction.

If that's not an option, i think the best advice I've heard here is to make the trip yourself to size up the folks you're doing busines with and the subject vehicle itself. Yes, there's extra expense with a plane ticket and accomodations but if we're investing anything like a serious amount of money for a new toy (Mog, Pinz, G-Wagen etc.) it probably makes sense to get your passport in order and make the trip to check it out first hand.

Only issue with that is if the vehicle you want to buy (amazing pitures and description, super phone call in broken English) ends up being a piece of crap rust bucket then say goodbye to $2-3000.
Now times that by 2,3,4 vehicles and your talking serious cash.
DealerS and vendors charge a premium but if you go with one that has a solid reputation in Europe you can save $$$ and end up with a solid vehicle and know its exact condition!
Some can even fix any issues so when it arrives you are good to slap a license on and enjoy.
I know many Mog owners that use dealers in Europe and they are extremely happy.
Bottom line it is all about doing the homework - either yourself or via a reliable proxy.

Hi,TechMogogy how would anyone including myself find out if the dealer is reputable? I have search the companies online and can find no information.I find the vehicles on autoline de but they appear to be a online advertiser. If anyone has reputable dealers that they work with maybe they could pm member and give a list of dealers in europe. As far as being able to go overseas I am not able to stand the flight as I have back trouble thats a long flight and also MONEY not that good.I am trying to sell the duece and half that I have to have money to buy the truck overseas. Not knowing anyone in Sweden so I have no one to go look at the truck and tell me what kind of conditon the truck is in.So pretty much have to take the dealers word and hope for the best.We all know that buying a used truck and it is not going to be one that is without some need of repair or least our standards of repair. We want the truck to be perfect but we have got to remember that they are USED trucks and may not have been care for like we would care for it.We prize our 4x4s and 6x6s because they are our toys and in need of time of bad weather they are our life line.I know that if I get to buy a Volvo it will need work and parts replace from time to time.I am not looking to use one as a offroad truck as there is no place in my area to take it offroad.I perfer to keep it original military as possible as I like to go to military vehicle show.So that is basically what I intend to do with the Volvo .Sorry for the long post Thanks
