fixing rear door latching mechanism - Help!

Post by bassman2 »

The rear door on my 712 has been messed up for awhile. I finally had the time today to remove the latching mechanism and play around with it.

Nothing looks broken or installed wrong. The problem is, the door won't stay latched no matter how hard I slam, or how I play with the lock and handles.

This is the small piece that helps reset the latching mechanism (I think thats what it does)

Here it is from the front...

and here it is from the back (inside the 712).

Both photos show the mechanism installed with the big side up, instead of down.. I was trying everything to make it work! With the small side up, it engages the main latch and helps "reset" it...

The problem is, the post on the door, just does not engage.

Does anyone know how this is supposed to work? Anyone fix a latch? HELP!!!

I re-built mine not too long, but don't remember the trick. Mine was full of ancient grease and dirt and worked after cleaning and regreasing. I did spend a lot of time with a print of the drawing from SAV's website-http://www.pinzgauer.com/showdetails.ph ... 111740460/ Click on "drawing"

I need to force the door a bit with my arm or shoulder from the spare tire to be able to open or lock it.

You have the wedge part in backwards, the flat side should face away from the door and should engage the latch only not the door lug.

Thanks guys, all input is appreciated.

And yeah I know the wedge is in backwards, I tried it both ways to see if it was messed up from before. It did look as if the shaft with the spring was slightly bent.

I'm going to take it all apart again, clean even better and see what the heck is going on.... It looks like all the parts are present, but it's just not latching onto the male post.

I was wondering about that, but thought it was the photo. it needs to be straightened out if its bent.

Well just in case anyone runs into this problem in the future......... I finally had time to take apart the lock plate and clean and inspect all the parts. Come to find out, the tongue had a slight ding in it... I pounded it out and smoothed it with a hammer. Put everything back together, and the door latches and stays closed.

I'm not really sure what I fixed - but it works now and that's all that matters!

I just installed a lock at the rear door. When taking the plate off to remove the door latch mechanism it is not necessary to remove the inside handle.
Remove the outside handle and the push-pull knob unscrews from the shaft from the outside. The 8 screws on the inside plate are all that is required to
remove the mechanism.

Grind the notch in the large door pin. Mine would not close so I took a dremel tool and shaved a bit on the large latch pin. closes great now.
