Plug wires

Plug wires
I used a photo blending app to provide the picture. It seems I have half military and half civilian spark plug wires. I just ordered new spark plugs and you can see which ones I have. You can also see the kind of wires that I have. What would be the best course of action to take with this dilemma?

My suggestion is to return the military plugs and just get the civilian upgrade.

You have two choices:
Either you buy civilian spark plugs as they will screw straight in to the cylinder heads and your CURRENT spark plug ends will connect to them with out any further issues.
Or, You buy military type spark plug leads (I don't know if you can buy just the ends) which. will then enable you to fit the military type spark plugs you have just bought and would give you a more waterproof solution to your high tension spark plug system.

The way that the plug wires fit on the current spark plugs seem to be not a very positive purchase. You have to unscrew the little Thing on the plug and it kind of just pushes on and holds with the little retainer clip inside the plug wire connection.

The current end of the HT lead which connects to the current spark plugs is just a "push" fit on to the end of the spark plugs. This is a solid enough connection for it to work and should not give you any trouble unless it is "really loose".
You should "feel" it clicking as it is pushed on to the spark plug as the clip inside slides over the threads on the top of the spark plug.
Modern cars have the same technology (if slightly altered) in having longer plug caps or keeping the little top that is screwed on the top of new spark plugs. See picture below:- The little silver top unscrews and then it will be the same as the ones you are taking out.
I have no idea where the best place is you can buy spark plugs from other than to say, your local car accessory shop or motor bike garage should be able to help you even if only to tell you where you could get the plugs from if they can't supply them. The champion L7 is a Haflinger recommended plug, so maybe they will cross reference it to what ever manufacturer they have dealing with, so you might end up with spark plugs from NGK or someone. As long as they are cross referenced to be equivalent to the L7, they should be all right to use.

Very easy, common plug, here is the Champion numbers, J6C #483. ($2-$3 ea on Mainland)
Used in Lawn mowers, small engines and Mopeds/Scooters.
Unscrew the top contact to use with your current(VW Type) plug wire ends.

Didn't you know that before you got one?
I am sure if you have a car parts place or a motor bike repair or as suggested a lawnmower / small engine repair place. They would have or at least be able to get hold of suitable spark plugs for you. Failing that, there is always the dreaded Internet!
