712M Air Conditioning
712M Air Conditioning
Once again, our military establishment has made it possible to buy very very expensive gear at great prices and due to our 24 system, not everyone can use them. So, low EBAY bids equals Pinz parts. When IED's started taking out our soldiers in Humvees, the army started up-armoring them with thick plates and glass. The result was mobile oven. Our guys were cooking in them. So, the army went to Red-dot Corp for help. They came up with a 32,000 btu unit, fully retrofit-table in the motor-pool. So, the contract went out for 5000 at a time. Long story short, these kits, still in the original box, are available as surplus. Mine had Iraqi dust in the box, but the whole kit was complete, even with instructions and extra parts. The compressor just fits the Pinz motor. I had to fabricate a bracket that cradles the alternator mount, keeping that mount on its rubber pad. The new compressor mount has a traditional tensioning bar, like an old-school alternator mount. I had to add a second pulley groove to the original main pulley. I simply cut off one of the pulleys that came with the kit and welded on and balanced it. The condenser unit is MASSIVE. The size of a 4 row muscle car radiator. I re-located the battery box to the starboard side behind the gas tank (bolts right in), and used part of the kits bracket to mount at an angle where the battery and tool boxes where. I then added a stout "nerf" bar and screen to protect it. The evaporator unit is mounted to the bulkhead behind the passenger. The unit works great and can cool the bed area as well. The insulated Tuff-River top along with insulating the sides help. When the compressor kicks in, teh rmps drop by about 180. When driving, I don't notice the except on inclines. I only need to complete the plenum to the console in the cab to finish the job. Temporary ducting has been sufficient so far.

Very impressed, you do great work and are obviously not intimidated by daunting tasks. A/C in a soft top Pinzie....who woulda thunk?

What about running those fans through muddy water - any worries about that?
What is the extruded alum on top of the side boards for?
Last few posts you have made have been inspiring for many!

I enclosed the condenser in a screen to avoid large chunks of stuff getting to the fans. They are sealed and can be fully submersed. Just can't have the AC on while navigating waters. I put a stainless heat shield between the condenser and the exhaust/muffler as well. BTW, the darn thing works so well the fans only run for about 10 seconds at a time, every 3-5 minutes or so.

Check out pictures of the slant backed HUMVEES. Some of these kits have those brackets. If you don't have any height constraints, it could be mounted any way you have flow through it. The kits come with plenty of hose length.

The photos I posted were old and not very good. Attached is a recent photo of the compressor mounted. It just fits with the belt line of one additional pulley.
