Engine Oil Level Too High

Checked the engine oil level on our new to us 71 Pinz 710M today. The level was above the full level mark, about an equal distance to between the high and low level marks. Oil looked clean. There is a slight oil smell in the cab, but no leaks on the ground.

Do you think I need to drain some oil out?

Make sure it's not gas. Fuel pumps have gone bad and pumped fuel into the engine.

With a "new to you" truck, I would be curious to do some routine maintenance before going down the road too far. I would suggest replacing all fluids you can, oil, hydraulics, transfer cases, transmission ect, so that you know the state of the truck a little better and know how much and what kind of oil is in everything. It's the only way, would not trust your truck to its previous owner, there is just no way to know when the last tie all that was done...

Write this down in a log and do it again next year.

Did you add oil and when, just after running or sitting for a long time.
Same question on when you measured the Oil level and saw it high.

Do you know the brand and P/N of the Oil filter? Some filters have
check valves some don't, some with checks leak, some hold Oil in
the filter for a very long time. The orientation of the Pinz filter is
horizontal, so it may hold in reservoir 1/2 a quart of oil or more but
with a poor check or no check valve that will leak back to the crank.

The Mann W940/29 has a check valve, but given enough time . drip . drip . drip .

You get the idea.

Check the following two possible sources of petrol reaching the oilpansump:

no. 1: the diaphragm of the fuel pump has a small tear, which causes a small but steady loss
no. 2: one of the level check valves of the carburators does not close properly, the engine runs way to fat and fuel is washed down the cilinders walls ... this is quite dangerous since it removes the oil film on the cilinder wall as well .

no. 2 is easy to check und fix and quite common since the valves are often worn by the motors vibrations. I recomend the original ones, if avaliable, since there was a problem with new OEM ones, leaky out of the box here in Europe ...

Thanks for the suggestions. I haven't done anything myself to the vehicle since we got it two weeks ago.

The Pinz had been sitting for 2 days before I checked the oil. In fact, it's been sitting for most of the time the previous Owner had it, he only put 100 miles on it in 4 years.

I've only driven it to the DMV and back, and will check the fluids and your suggestions before any significant driving. The previous Owner recommended I put synthetic gear oil in the transmission, transfer case, differentials and portal axles. I'll need to find out what kind. I know it's 80 wt in the manual.

I'll be out of town working as a ham operator at the Seed9 Rally in Jean this weekend. I'll check the oil filter brand when I get back. I think it's a typical auto parts store brand.

Do NOT use Synthetic Oil in either the Wheel drives or Engine.
Trani, Xcase and DIff's OK. Number of threads on this topic on the forum.

The manuals do not say, but it will make a difference if you check the oil immediately after shut down (it will read lower, as oil is still coating the internal engine components and passageways) or after it has set for a while and all drained down into the pan. I'd rather have too much vs too little, so my personal preference is to check the level after it has been running recently. Mine probably reads high after a few hours, too. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Checked the oil filter today, it's a WIX 51768. Specs say it does have an anti drain valve. The oil level on the dipstick is about 1" above the full mark.

Dump that oil filter, bypass setting is only 12 psi. You need at least 2 bars or > 30psi.

As far as the overfill goes, try measuring that again just after you turn the engine off.
If then it's W/I range mystery solved, Oil in the filter and Engine. If still high replace
the oil and that filter (IMHO I'd stick with Mann or Mahle) then watch it like a hawk
for any signs of creeping up -- if it does could be a gas leak as was suggested before.

I see Mann W 940/5 for import - hydraulic and engine oil? And Mann W 940. I assume W 940/5 is the one I want? And I see the Mahle OC 54 on EI. Thanks.

Motor oil recommendation?

I use Mann W 940/29. I believe the /5 is the same but has a "hexhead" drive on the rear end.
Both have a 2.5 Bar bypass. What ever EI sells would be great and you could trust.
