Top carburetor gasket too small
Top carburetor gasket too small
We have the SAV small idle screw carburetor repair kits. We found that the top gasket that goes under the cover is too small, all of the holes won't align with all of the ports. SAV said all their gaskets are the same. Do these gaskets need to be soaked in something to expand and fit the ports?

As far as I know they're exactly equal. I'm not with the Pinz now. I'll check with my Brother and see if he found the same problem on both carbs.

Re: Top carburetor gasket too small
interesting! I have never had this happen. I've had to modify gaskets to add a hole, but never had an issue with it being too small.

You may want to soak the gaskets for a while so they expand and fit right. Not sure what to use as a liquid. Jim made mention of this one time.

I saw that somewhere too, but couldn't find it again. It seems like one choice was brake cleaner?pinzinator wrote:You may want to soak the gaskets for a while so they expand and fit right. Not sure what to use as a liquid. Jim made mention of this one time.

For cork gaskets steam them, once soft then put them in place and allow to dry.
This is typical of the valve cover gaskets, I had a set that shrunk and needed to
be reshaped -- as per Jim L's instructions. I presume your gasket is off by only
a small amount and not a more than normal shrinkage would explain?

Re: Top carburetor gasket too small
I think it might be shrinkage. Most of the ports and holes lined up, but one very small port didn't line up at all.
We do have a hand steamer. Any tricks to that?

You want to flood that gasket with "live steam" Older movie buffs will pick up on that one
I'd use a Stove top steamer that fits inside a pot a flood those gaskets like your steaming a
pot full of Mussels. Give it 5 to 10 minuets and see they are soft and pliable.

Re: Top carburetor gasket too small
Well we dodged the bullet this time. When I told SAV about the small gaskets, they sent me two new ones. The new ones fit perfectly. Although the ones that were good from SAV and the ones in the kit from SAV are reportedly the same gaskets according to SAV, the ones in the kit had shrunk.

Re: Top carburetor gasket too small
I used hot water... just left them soaking for some time. Cant remember how much... until they fit well! I installed them slightly wet...
