Portal boxes drain and fill threads sizes?

Post by Haf-e »

I some how misplaced my drain and fill plugs for the portal boxes on my haflinger. I know they are m16 and m8 but I can't find the thread pitch.

I ordered a set from a great online supplier of metric hardware (belmetric.com) and got m16x1.5 and m8x1.0 but they don't seem to fit thread-wise.

Anyone know what they are? I tried a m8x1.25 bolt in the drain and it felt closer but still not right.

Thanks,
Haf-e

Well in lieu of a response or Haf-s parts manual, what you might
want to try is find a soft wood dowel that is slightly larger in
diameter than the peak of the thread cut and screw that in. Then
get your trusty Harbor Freight caliper on as many thread marks as
you can then divide by that number for the pitch. I am surprised it's
not a "fine" thread pitch of 1.5mm :?

Thanks - I'll have t try that. I checked the parts manual and it just says M16 and M8 unfortunately. I'll send off a message to SAV and HaflingerTechnik today to get prices on the real plugs. Also will check on getting a M8x1.5 and a M16x2.0 bolt to check the threads.

Would be a lot easier if I could just find where I put the old plugs!

You'll find them. As soon as you figure out a replacement solution that works ;)

Well I found a m16x2.0 bolt and tried the m8x1.25 bolt again - and they both fit. So the plugs I got don't fit. Now I have to find some in these threads...

I have it covered - they are M16-2.0 with a length of about 20mm and M8-1.25 with a length of about 10mm. These do not seem to be common unfortunately.

Researching it tonight and will report back on a source.

Well - I might just buy some flange head bolts and cut them short. I've found some M8x1.25s but the price is high. The M16x2.0 seem very unusual - can't find any.

Fastenal has the M16 bolts - need to check more on the M8s still - they had them with serrations on the underside but that seems like a bad idea.

boltdepot.com has both these sizes and treads.

Thanks! I placed an order tonight with "www.boltdepot.com" - here is what I was able to find that should work:

Item #17500 - M8x1.25 12mm long $0.26 each

Item #17533 - M16x2.0 35mm long $2.38 each

With economy shipping (and ordering 5 of each) the total was $20 even.

I verified that the clearance for the M16 plug is generous enough for the 35mm length - I measured 48mm prior to contacting the gear inside. For the drain plug it was much tighter - I measured 16mm of depth before hitting the teeth of the gear.

Hopefully these will work well. I report back once I have them on hand (unless I find the original one now...).

I would cut them down to the original length if you know what that is, mainly because there is oil in the hubs which is splash fed to the two bearings. If you put something in the way, you may change the distribution of the oil delivery - which "MIGHT" have bad effects on the bearings later.

Those sizes are common at McMaster-Carr.

Good point on cutting down the length on the M16 one - the M8 is short enough I think (12mm) to not interfere.

McMaster-Carr is a great resource but seems to only offer the 8mm ones packages of 50 - a bit more than I need... They also only offer the M16 in a minimum length of 30mm which would still require cutting it down.

Thanks for the reminder though about checking them.
