Wear ring question
Wear ring question
Fixing a leaky hub seal. Noticed the old wear ring has a plastic ring that sits under the o-ring. The plastic ring doesn't show up on the parts diagram and the new wear rings don't have this plastic. Does anyone know the story on these?

There are two spacer rings shown, of different sizes - 55mm and 60mm http://www.pinzgauer.com/parts.php?cat= ... view=04-10 See #16
Perhaps you have some sort of compromise between the two? Maybe somebody made the plastic ring up to account for the difference/s?? Other than that, I dunno.

has to be something someone "engineered" The 55 or 60 were the size of the wear ring.

I was thinking it was an "improvement" someone made along the way. The two sizes are too different to mix them up in any way.

My guess is it's a setting compound similar to loctite that someone has put there because the o-ring has a tendency to dislodge when fitting new wear rings.

While on the topic of wear rings. About 2 years ago I developed the classic leaky hub problem all over my Right front break.
All seals and Bearing were replaced -- I didn't to that job myself.
But now, the same wheel, is beginning to show signs of bearing wear, hmmm, odd, only after a few years.
All parts came from EI so I know they were the OEM origional parts.
Question, any reason to suspect wear is more pronounced on the Drivers side than the passenger?
And, how easy/hard is it to replace all seals and bearings, some of the bearing and gear pullers look
pretty standard stuff, but the spindle/tire flange extraction looks like a special tool, looks like wear ring
insertion might be a special tool as well.
So who's done this and any comments on proper tools.

Mine was done at a local auto restoration shop by a mechanic who had done these before, and it went pretty much like the EI video with just a few differences.
1) Instead of using the spindle extraction tool, there is just enough room to support the backing plate from the underside where the special tool bolts would go and push the spindle out with a press.
2) They used a lot of loctite on mine whenever it was serviced last, so it took a bit of heat from an acetylene torch to get things apart. Even the splines on the wheel flange gear were covered in loctite.
The mechanic is very familiar with my truck and was kind enough to let me look over his shoulder the whole time so I could learn from him. Here are a few pictures.

Ya, a local guy did my Left front wheel drive a few years back. He's in the Bay Area
and does work for EI so knows Pinz'ies well. But he is soooo darn backlogged with
his regular business your in a long queue So, I'm thinking it's a DIY but I don't
want any surprises. This wheel was apart once before and the only issues they
told me about were 2 broken bolts that needed extraction. I'd rather have someone
else replace these bearings and seals but ... ya gotta do what ya gotta do I suppose

The weight of the driver when driven solo...any reason to suspect wear is more pronounced on the Drivers side than the passenger?
I know that it is not your weight causing the problem; what "signs of wear" are you seeing?

Well it just feels like a bit of wear on the spline bearings. More
than I would have expected given the bearings and seals are
less than 3 years old. The right side has never been touched
under my watch and relatively speaking it's just tighter.
I think this is a case to just keep a watchful eye on, and if the
wear progresses -- it becomes one of the many winter projects.
I'll probably just order up all the parts from EI and begin to get
the necessary tools I don't have on hand.
