Ignition Issue

Post by ppearse »

Hi everyone!

I have been working on retrofitting the electronics in my 710k. All has gone well except, ofcourse, one issue this morning.

I have not touched the ignition switch in my replacing of parts but when I start the Pinzgauer (starts perfectly) by turning the key, when I turn the key to off, it does not shut off at all. I have to kill the engine by pulling the fuel jet plugs.

This didnt happen until after the dash work (I replaced the circuit breakers with new ones and added speedometer).

I was first thinking it could be a bad ignition switch but it doesnt start when in the off position, does start in the on position, just doesnt turn off when put back in off position.

Any ideas would be great!

Have you checked your idle cutoff solenoids to be sure they are turning off and on with the ignition switch? They are powered by breaker #10. With the engine cover off you should be able to hear them click when you turn the key to on. If you follow the wiring schematic, you should be able to double-check your breaker wiring. Perhaps you re-connected the solenoids to the wrong breaker?

There is something wrong - the ignition switch kills power to the ingition system to shut off the engine - the fuel cutoffs are just there to help reduce the chance that it would diesel (run on) if hot.

Use a meter to see what's going on...

That was it. #10 was wired wrong so the ignition was constantly on. Is there any good pictures online of the wiring for the circuit breakers? I am looking now for where the Black wires with green stripes go. I have the stock wiring schematic but wonder if there are pictures?

Black wire with green stripe (schwarz/grun) should go to breaker #11. The other end should be at terminal 54F on the headlight switch.
The schematics in the "Electrical" section of the forum are better than the ones that came with the Pinz and can be to blown up to read easier.

Thank you so much for your guidance and help. I printed the diagram from the forum so double checking all my work. The only thing the diagram doesnt resolve is that there are two black/green wires. It shows one goes to the light switch but doesnt show were the second black/green goes. Any thoughts?

I'd have to look up other schematics I happen to have for different Truck models to know for sure.
But there may only be 2 Geen's off that terminal and the 3'rd you have may be a owner modification.
Might want to trace that to it's end point.

The schematic does show another black/green wire that connects to the turn signal/high beam switch, the hazard switch and then to the right front and right rear turn signal lamps.

I've attached a color diagram that may help.

On second look I now see a back/yellow wire in addition to the 2 greens.
This is in reference to CKT BKR #10 -- as per the original posted. That
line is to the horn.

Thanks! Was actually talking about the wires on #11. There is black wire with green but there is another black wire with green but it doesnt show on the schematic.

Perhaps unique to the K model?

Thought you were talking about Breaker #10 "That was it. #10 was wired wrong so the ignition was constantly on. "
#11 is even more of a mystery. I have schematics for most of the Pinz models and don't see a clear match to what you
have. That said you have Yellow crimp lugs which are not stock so I'd bet the prior made some mod's here that just don't
match. You probably just need to trace back these connections ans see what was done.

Yea, its weird. There is no documentation on the second black/green wire. I can only assume it goes to some light. I am going through each circuit now and wire just to be solid. Thanks for everyone's guidance!
