Oil leak

Post by ziegler »

I've got an oil leak at bottom of steering column. Is this dot 3 fluid or 30w oil. I will order the gasket for repair but didn't know specific fluid needed. It's where the fill and drain plugs are at the bottom of the steering column underneath the removable floor plate. Thank you Zig

You should be able to "smell" the difference between gear oil and brake fluid.
Also a drop of that fluid should be enough to see if it's clear or has a yellow'ish
color to it. Most likely your looking at a gearbox leak.

I have a slight leak in mine, it's a rebuild from 7 years ago, so the gears are
tight and the leak is minor enough not to bother with. I started topping off
with 120 weight oil which seems to have slowed it down a tad.

Thank you. Am I right in assuming there's a gasket in the gear box that's bad to cause the leak. Zig

I would say that a gasket is the likely culprit. SAV seems to have them all in stock as well as a complete rebuild kit if you're so inclined.

My front diff has a slight leak (drip...drip.........drip) from the front diff after a rebuild as well. If it's not significant, leave it. pulling the front end isn't much fun.
