E-Brake handle plastic coating

Post by mm58 »

All of the hard plastic coating on the E-brake handle grip had gotten brittle and broken off.
It is just bare metal now.
Anyone know of a way to re-apply this coating? I don't think "Plasti-Dip" will do the trick (too soft)

Thanks
Mike

Black 1/2” heat shrink tubing with a 1/2” heat shrink end cap.

Hmmm, that seems like a pretty good idea. I might have to give that a try. Thanks Ron!

If the old modeled on plastic is still intact but cracked up and disintegrating,
might be good to patch it up and leave it on then use shrink tubing over it
to retain the bits in place. The handle tappers quite a bit, generally, shrink
material is 2:1 reduction in diameter. That just might work but may be loose
at the tip of the handle, thus a smaller diameter shrink end cap would help.
There is a 3:1 material on the market, it's more expensive and sourcing might
have some challenges.

3/4" 2:1 shrink tube. The bends were just too tight to get the tubing to lay out nice and smooth.
You can see how it bunched up with wrinkles and overlaps.
Oh well...back to square one :DD

all my ebrake handles appeared to be powder coating or an epoxy coating. If I were to refresh mine I would pursue those options.

Thanks Mike. Are your powder coat/epoxy ones OEM?
Mine was like a very thin hard plastic - like a hard boiled eggshell.

OEM. Some have redone theirs in Red, not sure what product they used. I have a few knicks in the one in my 712 and yes it is rather thick application.

https://www.tapplastics.com/product/fib ... oxy_resins I would think one of these products would match up with existing and work very well if not better. maybe an email to customer service for best option.

I repaired my Haflinger steering wheel with some epoxy, sanded and then painted - looks like new.
For the e-brake I want to redo mine at some point too - my idea was epoxy (perhaps even just JB Weld), sand and then either 2k paint or may just plasti-dip it

As much as I didn't think Plasti-Dip would work well, forum member "bumber"
encouraged me to give it a try.
Because the retaining pin is frozen (I can't even drill or drift it out),
I had to apply it in-situ with a small acid brush.
Pic is after two applications letting it dry completely in between.
I'm really surprised how evenly it flowed out, and it seems to be pretty tough.
It has a nice soft rubbery feel, but not so that it feels like it's going to easily peel off.
