Shipping Pinz out of US

Post by Wandering Soul »

I am trying to ship my 710k from Houston to Colombia for an extended vacation, but it has been on hold since Dec 8with US Customs while they decide if I need an export license for a military vehicle. I have a clear Florida title, but they want a bill of sale too. I can't post pictures, bUT it doesn't look military. Just wondered if others had problems, or is this mess just for me. Thanks.

Anything they consider to be military (like 4x4's that are flat green) need the license done before it's bought to any port. If not, it can be tied up in their system for months and you can end up paying massive "storage fees" which in a case I was involved with, equaled the value of a decent used car! Stay on top of it or it will get our of hand quick. If a bill of sale is needed, then get one and do it soon. Do whatever you need to do. All they want is some technical paperwork requirement met so they can move onto their next money making scam... and that's exactly what all of that is.

Thanks for the info. As soon as shipper gets back to work I will get started. What if I drive it to Panama and ship from there? Would that be simpler?

Oh I have no clue what shipping out from some place like that would be like. I'd be ready with some cash in hand though. Someone may want a payout to keep things running smooth.

Oddly enough, I bet it could be easier than dealing with the US when it comes to anything remotely military related. Homeland "Security" just throws the Pinz into the same category as a tank, as far as I've seen, and scam money out of you from there.

I didn't understand... you still have your truck in your hands? I was thinking Customs/H.S. had it.

You might find someone that's done kinda what you want to do, or at least has export from Panama experience here:

I didn't know this would happen, so I went to Colombia to wait for the Pinz. I'm there now, but I may have to go back and do something different.

I'll know in a day or two what daily storage charge is, and talk to the Customs again, but I'll probably have to cut my losses and do something else.

just out of curiosity:
would this military export rule be applicable if I brought my Pinzgauer running on Austrian registration to the US for a vacation ?
it is a green 6x6 truck ......

No you'd have it here on a temporary basis like a visa so exporting back home would fall under a very different area of rules. I'd just make sure to have someone handling all of that for you and ask lots of questions before doing any planning.

If you come to the US in a Pinz, make sure you plan on going through the SW desert regions!
