Locker indicator panel resturation

Post by rmel »

Restored my locker indicator panel for my 712 project.
One in the truck was in bad shape, as below. Thought
this would be a quick fix but as usual there are challenges.
The hardest part was removing the rivets on the data plates :x
These turned out to be steel rivets. What I ended up doing that
worked pretty well was to carefully grind then down flush using
a diamond wheel on a drill press. Then I used a carpenters spring
loaded brass punch to knock them out. Took some patience and
practice.

Stripped old paint off, and applied a Rust-oleum Metallic finish.
Used a HF 3/32" pop rivet which fits perfectly in the old hole but
tight.

More pleasing to the eye now 8)

Very nice! We have similar tastes.
As you said, I remember those rivets being a real bear to remove. Nice solution you came up with.

I switched to LED lamps at the time because the originals were not available and the old ones were very sad looking.

Pcolette - I would be interested in where you got those LEDs? Are they just a direct drop in? The green indicator covers just won't stay on my panel and would love an alternative.

Thanks

Both those panels look very nice, btw!

Texas710,
As I recall I bought those from SAV in 2010 and I now realize they were not LED. I don't see them on the SAV website now.
The round ones in the following picture are LED and I bought them from McMaster #7380K32. Not inexpensive at $13.75 a piece and require a round hole. I had the panel fabricated by a local shop.

BTW for just about all bulb bases, there are LED replacements. Both 12V and 24V.
I believe the locker lamps are BA9. Bought some of these off AMZN some time ago.
Bright, low current, but you have to file down the top slightly as it protrudes a tad
more then a std bulb.

The only difference from a 12V vs a 24V LED bulb is the value of the limiting resistor
built into the base.

Nice job Ron, but the rivets grind off from the back without any problem.

But now that you're retired, time doesn't matter.

Yes, I ground these off from the backside.
Although there was one I had to grind the
mushroom off from the front side, it was just
one stubborn rivet.

What a really nice job that came out. It's funny you had so much trouble with the rivets. Like that plates going to jump off the dash. But the wiper system on a pinzgauer, is the most fragile thing I've seen.
