Installing a digital tach with PinzSSI 2.0

Post by pinzinator »

I finally got around to installing a tach in my 710M, which has PinzSSI 2.0. This unit has a 12 volt accessory output and a digital signal equal to one pulse for every revolution of the module, which is equal to half speed of the crankshaft.

I found directions on how to use a Fluke to calculate frequency. The module is rotating at 250 RPM (10X multiplier), therefore the engine is rotating at about 500 RPM, which is what the tach shows. Adjustments are made by changing the dip switches in the back of the tach housing. You can Google directions on how to set the dip switches based on your application.

Here is the tach showing 500 RPM, which is correct.

This is the final installation. The manufacturer recommends no power to the tach when the engine is off, so I installed a ground isolating switch. The voltage converter still supplies voltage to accessories when the key is off, only the ignition module itself is turned off. There is minimal parasitic drain, nothing that will kill a battery.
I bought the 12v tach online, and the housing on EBay. The tach is held in place by pressure fit, and can come out easily if necessary.

Nice !!

I also installed a Tach on PinzSSI 2.0. However, I opened up the wire loom and tapped
the +12V Switched output of the DCDC so that the Tach only goes on when the ignition
switch powers the Carb solenoids. I went with a VDO tach, mounted on the dash with
a VDO reducer ring P/N# 600 851, goes from 60mm to 52mm.

You probably spent 1/2 as much for the same functionality not going with $$$ VDO :(

I always say, whatever works for you is good enough. I could have tapped into the same wire you did, and still might. I just like the idea of the module connected to a dedicated circuit, which may not make a bit of difference. Due to the fact that your Pinz runs proves my concerns aren't justified. Live and learn!

I did fuse that tapped line with a 2A fuse. Don't want a
short somewhere to take down the primary functionality :)

This is great stuff folks, thanks for sharing! Ron, would you be willing to share what you spent for the VDO and reducer option?

Gauge and reducing ring via Summit Racing (or Jegs).

You will need to also make a retention ring on the inside of the dash
to give a surface to bind to as the VDO gauge uses the "Spin-loc" rings
rather than the jack screws. The Spin-loc will go right through the 60mm
opening if you don't have a backing plate. I made mine some some scrap
Aluminum laying around with a 52mm opening.

The Guage also will need to use the switched +12V from the PinzSSI DCDC.
I also replaced the Gauge bulbs with 24V bulbs and connected them to the
24V source for all the dash lights.
