Howdy,

I suppose a brief introduction is in order...

I’ve been reading up here over the last year to feed my curiosity and admiration for the c303. I got to ride in c303 back in ‘12 at the Waldersee farm in Oregon and wanted to find my own ever since. I’m moving forward this fall purchasing one and will make a thread soon.

I wanted to add a link to a publisher that makes a hardcover printed manual. I’ve been reading through the manual online and happened to find a publisher that custom prints random books. They have the C303 service And operators manual hardcover version at 670 pages. I ordered one and it shipped pretty quickly. I’ll report back if the book is a big disappointment. Im excited to not rely on a three ring binder with computer paper. They have the whole .pdf for free to download or 35 bucks for (unknown quality) hardcover print.

Anyway, thank you all for this collection of information here at “real 4x4”. I hope to add some knowledge I pick up along the way.

The book is interesting, it's helpful in many ways, but there are some pages where the scan was off and you miss what's on the whole page, the pictures are not always easy to see... on the whole it's worth it to me, but it isn't as nice of a scan job as it should have been.

This is a drop box link with every online manual I've been able to find on the Volvo c303, TGB 1111 and the other variants.

Hello gentlemen,
The lulu.com manuals by Wes Cherry and Colby Boles self-published really do have utility when you are afield without computer/internet access. I always carry a back-up paper library when traveling in the Volvos...just to be safe. Did so for the most recent Descend On Bend event over the long Labor Day weekend. Cheap insurance in my mind.

I am sure you are both well aware of two other online sources for information:

https://www.c303.de/c303-en/index.htm

and

http://terrangbil.net/forum/index.php?/files/

The Swedish site has FAR more detailed information that what Michael's C303.de site has.

Dustin, I can't wait to go for a ride in whatever Volvo you decide to purchase. I am thrilled that the PNW TGB owner community is continuing to expand.

Take care.

Aaron, thanks for the Dropbox link. I’m hoping the lulu book is of decent quality, but nevertheless it’s great to have a print version in the truck. Hope to catch up soon.

Jim, I’m very excited! I’m going to head in the alu-zink direction. I missed you when I popped in with some fresh caught salmon. I’d would be very interested in a walk through of your truck before I go to tacoma to pick mine up and for course your place will be one of the first road trips!

This site, C303.de and terrangbil have been really interesting to read through. I’ve struggled translating terrangbil but there’s so much information out there.

I am very excited to work through refreshing such a historical gem and having a dozen or more c303’s in the PNW.

I actually own the original english manuals but also have an ultra rare english owners manual that I think were printed for the UK market which never happened. I keep it wrapped up and locked away like it's made of gold. :)

Dustin,
When is your truck scheduled to make Tacoma? Thank you for the salmon. Delicious!!!
Vince,
Have you ever considered scanning that rare manual and sharing then scan with either C303.de or terrangbil.net or both?
Take care...one and all.

I'm not sure the manual could be scanned without hurting it. It's oddly mint as-is and might have issues if I have to open it flat for scanning. I'll have to look at it again to see if it's possible. (I store it elsewhere)

I would expect that intellectual property and copyright is now in public domain. I’d bet that if you were willing some people could fund properly reprinting your manual in a high quality form. I didn’t realize that the lulu press edition was shade-tree type quality. Just as important as keeping parts available keeping all this information safe is paramount.

I have a long wait ahead of me, my truck is scheduled to land mid-November. I guess I’ll just read the manual cover to cover a few times.

Thank you for sharing all of this great information here guys.

Dustin,
I know Mercedes had been EXTREMELY possessive/protective of their intellectual property when i came to reproducing parts, service and operator's manuals. A firm called Buch und Bild had sole rights to produce and sell Unimog manuals. Thankfully, Volvo has allowed their documents to be uploaded to various sites and then made accessible to all those interested. All they ask is to show that the original source was Volvo. Simple. November will be hear sooner than you know although the wait can be agonizing at times.

Vince, I understand your concern and would not want to see this rare manual harmed in any way. Just a quick search of the internet came up with these groups:

https://everpresent.com/bound-books-to- ... g-service/

https://www.josephmerritt.com/scanning- ... bound-book

and my favorite this far (their name is so uniquely fitting)

https://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Gutenber ... _the_pages.

from their FAQ section...
"S.8. My book won't open flat enough for a good scan, and I don't want to cut the pages.
Well, then, you have a difficult choice to make, but you do still have several options:
You can accept a poor-quality scan, and spend a lot of time fixing up the guttering on the margins.
You can bite the bullet, and cut the pages.
You can type the book, or find a typist who will work on it for you.
You can find a print shop or bookbinder who will cut the pages professionally, and re-bind the book when you're done. You may even replace it with a fresh new binding that will give the book a new lease of life.
Take your choice.
Most books will open flat enough for an adequate scan, though you may have to put stress on the spine to do it.
If you have a really precious book, and you can't find a typist, you might consider the options of a digital camera [S.11] or finding someone with a planetary scanner [S.2] to scan it for you.
Michael Hart said: "I would give up every book I own, including my first edition of the OED, my Civil War edition of the Merriam Webster's Unabridged, etc., etc., etc., so everyone could use it any time they wanted rather than that only I or my friends could use it . . . and obviously I could use it too."
Fortunately, it rarely comes to that."

Hope this helps.
Take care.

Thanks for the info Jim!

I received my manual, it is as described by Aaron not bad but not the best quality. Wonder if we could find someone with a lightly used original manual who would be willing to have it professionally reproduced. Ive got 600 pages to pour over while I wait.

Best,
Dustin

I too ordered the LULU.COM manual. Very helpful even though the scans are not that great. Worth the money and is a great place to start while you collect originals.

Digiman,
I think EVERYONE on this forum would be interested...as well as many on other forums as well! Can these video gems the uploaded to YouTube or some similar service? I am not the best person at knowing what can be done with digital data.
How long are these films?
Take care.
