*not mine* nice 1973 712M 19K miles in AZ

Post by GED »

Seen on Craigslist. The engine does look real nice.

I wonder why this particular one cannot be registered in California according to the Ad ?
Since, it's a 1973, shouldn't it be easy to register in CA?

One of the very few original, unmolested, fully professional serviced and fully operational Swiss Army Pinzgauers left in this country.

1973, 31084 Km / 19420 mls on the odometer which can be assumed to be original since vehicle was refurbished in Switzerland during service in the army.
Original Paint with very good, rust free and straight body.
Only modification is electronic ignition and spark plug wire conversion of highest quality. NO oil drips anywhere on this engine !

Take a close look at the photos, especially the engine, then compare to others if you can find them in similar condition.

Clean AZ title, legal in all US States except California, can deliver at extra cost.

Fair market value IS $ 26500 but I am open to fair cash offers, NO Trades and NO Walmart style price suggestions. Contact via E-Mail Only Please

Per Scott at EI, CARB made a revision for years younger than 72 (73, 74 and up) may need extra testing that is available but only in Santa Monica area. As such the cost for such test needs to be taken into consideration before purchasing one to CA. Heard stories people getting away with it here and there but my personal opinion a reputable seller will caution you against buying those years if you live in CA.

Ya, I had no problem with a 73' 712 which had never been
registered anywhere -- living on a Vineyard as a tour wagon
didn't need it.

But your mileage can vary in Cali, all depends on which DMV,
who's behind the counter or if you used a 3'rd party DMV partner.

My last understanding was 71/72 are easy in CA and 73/74 are expensive and risky requiring emissions testing at the expensive lab. YMMV.

Not necessarily, 73 is less likely to require anything beyond 71/72, 74 could be more of a "sneak it through".
But, testing can no longer be enforced. The one last lab that was supporting this stopped doing testing
a couple of years ago, I confirmed that directly from their lead guy. For them it was more of a PITA than a
source of revenue. This may be why there's fewer reported fails to register, but again it's the DMV, it's
not going to be 100% assured.

Also DMV and CARB are two totally separate entity. DMV may be ok with it, and then later (in terms of years) CARB catches up and causes headache. In the end, it's up to you if the risk of headache is worth it.
I tried using one of the DMV partner Rmel mentioned but was unable to transfer an out of state title because the VIN number is not standard, so I had to go to the DMV and had the vehicle VIN verified. If it's CA registered already then no issues there.
