Pinz Salvation

Post by Kauf3607 »

Good Morning all this is my first post and I'm very new here.

Name's Brad I'm 23 from Southern California. I've been in love with Pinzgauers since I was about 7. Dad's old college roomate had a sweet 710M we went camping with a couple of times. Enough about me though....

Recently I was showing my work friends about these machines and it just so happened one of my guy's grandparents has a Pinz sitting at their farm shop. It looks a bit dilapidated, but has only been sitting for a few months supposedly.

I'll attach some photos and I'm looking for opinions from other Pinz owners as to if this woud be worth salvaging. No idea what coud be wrong with it but I imagine it might be a bit easier to resurrect versus my 84 BMW 318i. My dad has experience with VW bug engines and we hail my uncle as the Irish Oracle when it comes to anything mechanical.

My budget is limited which isn't conductive to owning a Pinz but MAN would I love one. Any thoughts on what to offer for it?

Hi and welcome to the crazy addiction of Pinzgauers!

A quick glance at the photos shows a number of missing parts which you may or may not want to replace, and also some modifications. Unless you've had some recent flooding, that Pinz has been sitting for more than a few months based on how deep the tires are buried in the mud. I've owned 5 710M's over the last 14 years, 4 of which were bought in varying degrees of disarray. Of those 4, I paid $2000 for the least desireable one and $5500 for the one needing the least work. The one you are looking at, based on your photos and therefore limited information, I would say should be at the bottom of the price range.

It definitely has potential but without an in person lookover by someone with Pinz experience it is difficult to say.

Where in So. Ca. are you located? Maybe there is another owner nearby who'd be willing to look at it with you.

Good luck!

Thanks for the feedback! I'm located in Imperial County and I actually know at least 1 other 710m owner but I'm not sure if he still lives in San Diego County. I think I will work on trying to actually visit this thing in person and get a lot more pictures/backstory. I imagine this one is going to be in the lower price range as well. If I do decided to buy it hopefully I can use that as a selling point to drive the price down lol. Thank you again!

Well it all comes down to the drivetrain realy.....if that is ok without big problems than you are a big step ahead. So make sure the engine is free and complete, no big oil leaks under the gearbox and axles, look at the swivels on the front axle that they have nice crome on them....

I "bumped" into a 710M owner in Borrego Springs during my last trip there in 2016, I *think* his handle here is "Borregopaul" (member's last activity is mentioned as the day he joined in 2004) but not sure.
All the best with your new acquisition!
