Left turn signal problem.

Post by Tyler » Fri Jun 26, 2020 5:57 pm

Hey all, tricky problem here. My 710 decided to give me a challenge. So I accepted. Sort of. I have replaced my stock mechanical flasher with a new sav version and all is good with the right turn signal, front and rear lamps flash and work fine. The left front amber turn doesn’t light up at all when the steering column switch is activated, and my rear led lamp goes solid (bright) red, as though the brake is depressed. The flasher is still clicking very slowly, and will eventually stop in 5 or 10 seconds, and if I press firmly down on the turn signal lever it will flash normally again, but still no flashing on either the left front or rear turn. Here’s the kicker....the hazards all work fine. So I believe it’s specifically down to the left side turn signal being the problem. Would it be safe to say a good starting point would be in the switch on the column? Particularly the left side portion? Thanks for any help!

I am having a very similar issue. I was messing around with the ground on the relay and disconnected some of the wires. When I reconnected I mixed them up and burned up the relay as now I cant get back to the problem you are having. So I put the original relay back in and am back to where you are with the lights. If you figure it out, please share the information.

ALso, does anyone have a source for a replacement relay? I hate paying $16 shipping for a $10 part from SAV!

The replacement flasher from SAV does exhibit some quirks. It is
not the classic bi-metal flasher but it does exhibit a load dependence
as you have observed. That is, you rear LED is ON but no flash. That
is likely due to insufficient current draw from that one LED lamp with
a lack of additional load from the front Left turn bulbs. I think you
are on the right track, likely a dirty contact on the left turn terminals
inside the switch. That Swiss turn switch is more complicated than
the Austrian version as the rear Turn and Brake bulb is shared. The fact
that all lights work when HAZARD is on pretty much points to the turn
switch as you have deduced.

I had a pretty darn flaky switch on my 712 and fixed that by spraying
some Dielectric grease inside the terminal block followed by repeated
movement up/down working the contacts. This may or may not work,
you might need to try some brake cleaner first. From my recollection
this unit was not easy to take completely apart W/O damage.

You might get lucky.

I am also having left turn signal problems though not electrical. Mine is a mechanical switch problem in that the lever just won't move downward. It is a hard stop. Last week, I was surprised when out of habit i moved the lever and it worked, but not since. Upward for the right signal is fine. I planned on tackling this in the next few days. Ron, what specifically was difficult in disassembling the swiss switch? ( sorry if this should be a different topic.)

Somewhat vague recollection, but I do recall I wanted to strip it down
to expose the internal contacts then decided not to. Could be a crimped
enclosure and I did not want to break it. You may find that disassembly
is easier than I recall.
