I belive that for me, the most optimal would be to have 2*24V with the same size as 2*12V, then I can load them both from the original generator, and separate them as one batt for the engine and the other for consumers such winch or 24->12 inverters.
Maybe a possibility to via a switch use them all ...

I don't see any reason why you shouldn't be able to plug in any light you want.
Just remember that one is always on(controlled by ignition key) and the others are controlled by the dial for military lights.
I have experienced that the following issues can case this. 1. The linkage may need a check and tuning. 2. The rubbergasket?, the round rubberlike thingie, at the bottom of the stick can sometime force the stick to move to neutral.
