While working on the pinz this weekend to try and track down the eratic idle question I discovered the possible reason. Fuel filter. Do not know when it was last replaced or by whom, but the pinz seems to run much better after replacing it. The filter always looked good when I changed the oil or just lifted the cover to check things, but what I did not realize is that the gas only fills it half way and always from the bottom. Of course the top looks good. When I removed it, the bottom was so gunked up I am surprised that any gas ever got through.
...also, there were flecks of red in it, not rust but something else, like paint chips. Maybe from the gas can that I use occasionly to refill the tank?
...so, this fuel filter is something that I wil replace on a regular basis from now on. Cheap insurance.

krick3tt- Sounds like you have the begining of the dreaded red death. Inside the tank was a coating of something red to protect the inside of the tank from corroding. Once this starts to come off you will have problems with the fuel system. You will plug filters with this and if it makes it past the filter you can clog up the carbs. I have not had this happen but I have heard about it on the boards. I do not know how to repair this without changing the tank. I am sure that someone here will know what to do. Good Luck!

Replacement tanks (aftermarket extended capacity) are around $1200. Could not even begin to guess what a factory tank would run. You might give SAV a call for a quote. You might get lucky and find a used one but I would ask why they removed it. I would guess that it either leaked or had the red death.

Thanks for the input.
I have contacted Scott at EI and they stock a kit to clean and recoat the inside. Less than $60, so the risk of getting a used tank and not knowing if I am better off or not is eliminated. I have no dents or holes in mine so far. Relining it seems to be the route to go.
I appreciate the knowledge on this forum and the resopnses to help me keep a few more pennies in my 'fix the pinz fund'.
