Speedometer O ring

Post by Eric »

Greetings,
Can anyone help me with the proceedure for changing the speedometer o-ring? I have a leak where the speedo cable installs into the case. Any help or tips on this would be very much appreciated.
Thanks!

Is it coming out of the cap or where the round housing goes into the differential housing cover?

Relatively easy if it is the cap leaking.
Loosen and remove speedo cable from top of speedo sleeve. Unscrew the cap from the body. (Gently, the sleeve staying in the cover has aluminum ears to keep it from rotating. excessive force will break it off. Remove the short adapter shaft, and then pick the o ring off the adapter and install o ring and reverse procedure.

If at the base of the adapter, then you follow the preceeding and then drive out the aluminum pin holding the sleeve into the cover, the drive the sleeve up (hold the end of the drive gear as you come up so it doesn't fall in the the housing. Now pick the o rings off the sleeve. Then grease up the end of the drive gear with off molylube grease. insert the drive gear into the sleeve. hold the end of the gear while driving the sleeve back in. (you don't want the gear to fall in. ALSO, VERIFY the gear is engaged on the GEAR in the cover. The drive gear in the case is steel, and the driven gear in the sleeve is nylon/plastic. It won't last long if not aligned). Once the sleeve is seated, drive the aluminum pin back in and reinstate as above. It is also suggested that you lube the speedo cable occasionally. This help reduce the force on the driven gear in the housing.

Speedo o-ring

Thanks very much for the helpful info! I will tackle this on the weekend and hopefully this will solve my oil leakage. I am not sure where it is coming from exactly as it only leaks when I am driving it.
I will let you know how things turn out.
Regards,
Eric
