expedition spares

Post by SAM. C. »

Hello Everyone

I am planning a long trip mid next year along Canning Stock Route in Western Australia in my 710M. I would be very interested to hear what spare parts you guys think are essential to carry on a long trip? The trip will last three weeks or more and cover 5000 Kms (3000 miles), a lot of it will be sand driving? What generally goes wrong with Pinzgauers out in the field? What would you carry?

Thanks

Sam,

Well these are the things that have gone wrong with my truck in the 4 years that I’ve owned it. I now carry spares with me.

Fuel pump-at minimum carry a rebuild kit.

Points- unless you have a petronix upgrade of course.

Limiting strap- you can cause some major damage if you break a limiting strap and consistently lift that wheel off the ground.

Fan belt

Spark plugs- Actually never needed them but you never know.

Bolt box- I carry a box of bolts that fit the pinz. Things tend to rattle loose on long trips.

I also carry enough oil to do a complete oil change. I’ve seen drain plugs fall out and get ripped off on rocks. Also carry some gear oil for the diffs, break fluid and such. All the parts in the world won’t help if you got no fluids.

That’s about it for me on spare parts. I’m sure others will have input on this

Fuel lines & clamps

There's something that will stop you, a busted fuel line. Carry a fire extinguisher, too.

SPARE PARTS

A trip that far...find a place for an extra spare tire. Oh yeah, an air compressor too. Headlight bulbs.
And at least one of the party should be a little mechanically inclined.

Just invite ProfPinz along. That way you can cannablize his truck along the way as needed.

In the way of actual useful advice, I'd suggest several sets of spark plugs and other ignition parts. Perhaps some other small, hard to find things, like the plastic fittings that go on the carburator linkages, a rebuild kit for the fuel pump and a fuel filter.

Also be sure you lubricate inside the dizzy so the shaft doesn't run dry!

Don't forget an axle boot or two. Even with a Pertronix, bring spare points.
