Well I've lurked here awhile, bummed rides on a Treffen, and now with Dennis' help (of LinDen) should be a new owner (of an old original Swiss Pinzie, right off the boat, hopefully a 712, but we'll see).

I have to be patient, but I think being deliberate will help in finding a good 712 or 710.
Got a call from SAV on a quote on car carrier delivery to Denver area. Haven’t chosen which one yet though, still have to talk to Willy about details, overall condition, necessary options (e.g. Petronix, safety glass, tail lights)
Told them I'm leaning to making the "ultimate road trip". I've only driven a Pinz around the block on a test drive at Linden, although I feel already comfortable enough to take one on a 800 mile + trip. Noisy, drafty, skittish when braking from highway speeds, but if I keep the speeds below 50 mph and plan for a leisurely trip, then all should go well (I hope).
However, I would like some advice from anyone – those new to Pinzgauers and the ‘old-time’ experts. Should I do this (would be next month, October) ? What do I need to bring? e.g. special tools, spare parts? What should I look out for when we stop for a break? Should I forgo the whole thing and pay a 18-wheeler to just ship it to Denver?
Just fly down there & drive it home. I flew up to San Francisco and drove mine back to Phoenix. It was 800+ miles and it took me almost 24 hours. Are the diffs gonna have their oil changed before you get it? Make sure you check the engine oil and check for any possible oil leaks when you stop. I brought a tool box full of stuff and never needed it. The Pinz tool kit should suffice if the need arises. Bring ear plugs and get a couple quarts of oil just in case. Don't forget the camera! A road trip like that is a great way to get to know your new Pinz.

It seems like these can just go whenever. I just got home in the middle of the night last night with a new to me 6x6 that I picked up in the middle of no where nebraska. I always buy any Pinzs for sale near me at all as if I like them I will keep them for myself or if not I will just sell them. It is a self supporting bad habit that way.

Man, you got the jones bad, Bryan! I bought mine from Bryan and drove it home almost 1000 miles in zero degree weather!
Yeah man, just drive it home. I bought my 710 from Sean down in Georgia and drove it home to eastern Iowa. I just brought oil ( didn't even use it ) and ear plugs when I drove my Pinz home. I drove about 55 MPH and took two days to get home, just take your time and enjoy the trip and everything should be fine.
I drove two 710M's from Phoenix, Az. to Telluride, Co. in August! It felt like being in a loud, uncomfortable, hair dryer for 12 hours. No mechanical issues thankfully. My buddies that helped me disserve an award!
I drove my 710M from San Diego to Seattle and back through Eureka Nevada to San Diego last month with a stop at NWMF in Sheridan Oregon for a few days. Used no oil but lots of gas. Got between 13.5 and 14.5 mpg when I checked it randomly. Put over 3300 miles on it in three weeks of travel. Great fun. I only drive about 50 so there is lots of time to see the country. I just got a M416 trailer for the trip back to Seattle next month. That should be another adventure on the 'comfy' military seats.
Just installed a good radio for the 'company'.
The kit of tools is plenty for minor repairs although I have added a few things of my own based on off road adventures.

Definately drive it, and the only additional tool you need will be a credit card just in case

Turns out afterall that I won't be able to drive the pinz (lowercase, until I know which exact one it is...) back to Colorado. Have a family issue that makes me stay near the hometown for the next month or so. Well it was a nice thought... "ultimate road trip" indeed... ('ultimate' in that it would be in a pinz, not in distance though! ~ 800 miles can be covered in a day in a modern car nowdays...) So, after delivery to Dennis in Golden for a complete check out, I plan on some regional (Calif, Ariz, Wash, Moab) treffens in the future. I promise to drive to some! I'm sure ya'll will remind me!
