Stymied by no spark

Post by hawkwind5usa »

My Pinz finally let me down. I have no spark. Truck has Pertronix ignition. The stock coil reads 4 ohms primary and 12000 ohms secondary, seems normal.I have 14 volts at the suppressor before cranking and 21 volts while cranking(normal?).The ballast resistor read 4 ohms. How do you check the igniter for the Pertronix? I tried what the manufacturers instructions say about connecting a jumper from the red lead to the 24 volt battery positive it still has no spark. Could the coil still be defective even though it tests ok with a ohm meter? Need some ideas! I've been checking continuity from the coil to the key switch to no avail.

Testing the Pertronix ignition

Post by hawkwind5usa »

Well the no spark problem has been solved.Turns out it was a bum coil wire, but I learned a valuable troubleshooting tip that I will share with those of you with a Pertronix electronic ignition. To test the ignitier mounted under the distributor first remove the distributor cap and rotor, then connect a analog voltmeter across the 2 leads of the igniter set the meter to read at least 25 VDC, now turn the ignition switch on.Now comes the hard part! Turn the crankshaft pulley by hand(a large box wrench will fit in the slots of the pulley),you should see 24volts then zero volts as you turn the crankshaft. This is caused by the magnet triggering the igniter when you see zero volts. The coil is supposed th send high voltage caused by the electrical field collapsing in the coil which is actually a step up transformer! If you don't see the change on the meter either you hooked the meter up wrong or the igniter is bad.Mine was good. I'm back in the saddle again!!
