Post by Erik712m »

Has any you heard of the ability to replace fifth gear to achive highway speed? I was told today that they are doing it in California.

5th in a 710/12 is not a gear but direct drive. With some rework, 4th can be made into an OD gearing. Think of it (gearing wise) shifting from 1st,2nd,3rd to 5th and OD... a long step between 3rd (2.04:1) to 5th (1:1), since 4th (1.30:1) is now a OD gear of some sort.

Hearing this once before, long ago. I would say that the one probably suggesting to do this, is not some one you'd want to work on your Pinz....

There was someone on ebay offering some kind of overdrive conversion like this.

Hi Vince
If it's the same one, they were TD trannies

And their gearing is a lot different than the gassers.

716/18 5 speed

1st 4.25
2nd 2.505
3rd 1.48
4th 1.00
5th .747

710/12

1st 5.33
2nd 3.24
3rd 2.04
4th 1.30
5th 1.00

I found a six speed with the following. 3.636 (1st gear), 2.375 (2nd gear), 1.761 (3rd gear), 1.346 (4th gear), 0.971(5th gear), 0.756(6th gear) First gear is 1.694 off the factory gear. How would this affect take off? Would it ruin the clutch?

First gear @3.636 sounds fine to me. A lot of guys start in 2nd gear @3.24 in the stock tranny.

Is this a common tranny and is it a direct fit?

Miles, Hi it's out of a wxr found out it's to long. But how about the nsg370 out of the jeep liberty? 4.46(1st gear) 2.61 (2nd gear) 1.72 (3rd gear) 1.25(4th gear) 1.00 (5th gear) .84 (6th gear). It would need adapter made but looks like it would fit?
