Restoration v modification.

Post by bernhard »

Ok here’s a question I’ve been contemplating over for some time. To increase the value of the vehicle is it better too restore it to original like new condition or modify it to be more modern, comfortable or off-road worthy? I’m wondering as these vehicles get older and are modified into different configurations by there owners will there one day be a demand for a bone stock vehicle? Will all Pinzgauers except a few rot at a junkyard some were waiting to be found and restored? I’m guessing there probably never going to be collector’s items. I’m asking this because on my 712 I’ve made a lot of improvements but never drilled a hole so all the changes can be put back to stock. On my 710K I want to make it into a fun to drive wagon with lots of fabrication that can’t easily be undone. Any and all comments on this are welcome just looking for some direction.

Thanks
Bernhard

as long as the work is well thought out and done in a presentable manner the value does not seem to change, at least at this point. The only thing we have seen so far is how fast a vehicle will sell. If the work is done in a very clean manner and you have patience the vehicle will sell for slightly more but no where near what you put into it, restored or modified.

I agree with Mark. Making any upgrade to the truck will make it more fun to drive but you never get your money out of it. The truck is not an investment for future ROI, pay back comes in the enjoyment of driving it.

I don’t plan on making money on it for that matter I never plan on selling it. I just didn’t want to destroy the historical value of it, if it ever will have one.

Hello

As far as the historical value goes; I am sure there are plenty of people in Europe worried about that such that you don't have to. Besides, just look at Pinz Enthusiest's truck. It looks as though it just rolled out of the factory doors. Nice and stock!

My opinion is to make the vehicle as useable and practical as possible for your applications and if that means "updates" that reflect newer and better technology, go for it!

I just don't see these as collector items. I bought mine for me, not the next guy and I'm modifying it accordingly.

And someday you will share your work with the rest of the community. I am sure they will appreciate it as much as I do. :D

I picked up my 712 based soley on its offroad abilities. If someone does not like what I have done with it, then so be it. I am not a real fan of seeing them just sit in a driveway/garage and not out on the trails but then again, so be it.

See what you have gone and done . . . made me say SoBe' now I will have to find some gas.

Bernhard,

Do like we have talked all along, do your own mods making as few new penetrations as possible, just so you can revert back if you want to, now yo uknow I have made a bunch of new holes in mine for various accessories, most will stay if I ever do sell, but like you I plan on keeping it and passing it on to my son one day, Eric P. thanks for the props on my truck, and I will agree with you to a point, but as far as a stock looking truck fress off the factory floor I would have to say Bernhards 712 looks a lot better than mine.
