My "new" 712 and LinDen Engineering

Post by andy »

Well, I finally got my new 712 home. The tale started in early June, about a week or so before the Big Bend trip. If I remember right I had inquired about something for my 710 with Dennis Williams, LinDen Engineering in Golden, Colorado via email. I know somewhere along the way I had mentioned that I was interested in a Volvo TGB 1111 that I had seen on the internet, but couldn't really justify a "toy".

Shortly thereafter Dennis told me that he was about to come into possession of a 712M that had been sitting on his lot for a number of years and that pretty much the previous owner owed money on it and had pretty much abandoned it. In a telephone conversation Dennis described the physical shape it was in and what all it would take and cost to get it running right again. I told him I was very very interested and he set about to sort it all out. In case anyone is wondering the total cost and restoration was about 1/2 the cost of a 712 listed with the dealers on the internet.

Long story short, Dennis finally became the owner and the restoration (for lack of a better word) was finished, so off we went to recover it.

There has been a lot of negative innuendo posted here about LinDen Engineering. All I can say is that from day one everything the man told me was straight forward and true.

I was there for several days getting some work done on my 710 and getting some "edumacation" about proper maintenance on Pinzgauers.

While I was there I saw at least 9 other Pinzgauers that were there for one reason or another. Included in that group was the Red Bull 712

and a 712 that belongs to the Army Special Forces guys out of Fort Carson, Colorado.

There were also several Land Rovers, several Ural motorcycles, a couple of Mogs and at least one semi tractor with a bad apu stopped by. Not the type of activity one would expect to see in a shop that does shoddy workmanship Or makes a practice out of cheating people.

Before anyone thinks that this is a paid advertisement let me assure you that my bill for work on the 710 was over a grand so there were no discounts there or anything like that.

I drove the 712 off the lot. Near Castle Rock, Co. on I-25 south, the 712 back fired several times. It was loud enough for my wife, who was following in my pickup trailering the 710 to think the trailer had a problem. We stopped and checked it out and there was nothing wrong with the trailer, but we did notice oil all over the undercarriage on the 712 down the right side. I called Dennis and explained what we had heard and seen. It was already after 6:00 PM, so we decided that I would just continue to Colorado Springs and take the 712 back the next day.

The next day, Dennis discovered that the plug in the transmission on the top inboard side had blown or shaken out and that the backfires had blown a couple of holes in the muffler. He had his crew weld the holes in the muffler and put a new plug in the transmission and I was gone again before noon. No charge.

Since I've had it home I've put over 200 miles on it without a hitch. It actually feels smoother and seems quieter than my 710.

So, yes in a way this a plug for Dennis and LinDen Engineering, but it is a deserved plug.

Here's some more pictures of the 712 at home. By the way, it has a working heater in it. You can see the fuel tank for it above the jerry can holder.

I hope you like the 712 Andy....it certainly sounds like you do!

Now Andy, PLEASE, PLEASE tell me your going to change those tyres!!!
The Pinzgauer is a great off-road vehicle, but on-road it's....hmmm
Limiting it off road ability with tyres like that is somewhat akin to fitting an Enzo Ferrari supercar with a $50 set of cross-ply tyres!

As regards Dennis I've kept in touch with him for years and he's helped me out with a few second-hand parts etc over that time.... he was also VERY helpful in regards to information when I was purchasing a Webasto heater and I brought it here in Australia so there was no monetary benefit for him, so in my opinion he's a great bloke! :D

John, thanks, I'm sure I will have fun with it.

Peter, they are the Yokohoma Geolanders. I'd never really heard of them, but that's what was on the truck. Yes, as soon as they get a little more wear they are slated to go. I don't think they will weather the places I drive too well, but who knows. I'm not real big on the chrome wheels either, but 17" wheels for a Pinzgauer would seem to have a very limited market on E-Bay.

The "original" owner had some sort of ABS or fiberglass hardtop on it and the UV rays did their work on it while he left it sitting. Along came a big snow and the roof literally caved in leaving the interior in less than pristine shape. So there is some work to be done there also. It still has the black plastic inside door covers that leave a little something to be desired and there is some surface rust in all the usual places that were mentioned on the SDP site.

But, for the price I got it for and the fact that Dennis and his crew did such an ace job getting it running right there is money to fix the little things step by step.

When he was still posting here I often read his posts where he would analize a problem just from reading it here. While I was there I heard him do the same thing over the telephone several times. He is definitely not stingy with information. There's no doubt in my mind the man knows his business.

Cheers

Andy, Geolanders (or "Geo-squealers" as they are often called here) are fitted factory standard to some SUV's in Aus, including the Subaru Forrestor (I don't know if it's the same in the US)
(BTW, we call heavy duty off road vehicles 4X4's where you call them SUV's and what we call SUV's or "soft roaders" you call SAV's (???... or maybe cross overs, cross platform, soft 4WD's???)

Geolanders have a reputation (as the above name implies) of dubious road grip when pushed beyond the norm, but apart from that I think they are probably a good "soft-roader" option..... As regards whether they are suitable for Pinzgauers, particularly a 712 given it's ability off road, I'd have to say NO!

As regards the wheels (I'm like you in as regards chrome wheels etc....I'm not one for "bling") some-one may be prepared (someone who likes that type of thing  ) to swap a standard set of Pinny wheels for yours....You never know you luck in a big city! :D

.... Anyway, it sounds like a nice little resto project ....I'm sure you'll get a lot of enjoyment out of the vehicle.
Good Luck with it!
Peter

I hope that you enjoy your new truck Andy. Perhaps if you do not like the wheels you could sell them in exchange for wheels /tyres that you want. What tyres might you be looking at have you a short list? I bet it can get a bit muddy occasionally on the Ranches up where the feeding stations are. the impressions that we get over here though are of the rock climbs that are seen in many of the terffen.

I miss Dennis on this Forum, he contributed a lot. He was very helpful to a lot of folks and entertained us with his adventures and experiences. It can be a bit dull without him.

Andy,

I didn't realize that you were even in the market for a 712. I'll be curious to hear how you like it and how it compared to your "little" 710.

Enjoy!

Congratulation on the new toy Andy. 8)

I have to agree with you on the way Dennis is doing business. I called him for some infos on how to tear the rear drive train apart because of oil leak.

Image

Well the answer was an almost complete step by step procedure and all that for the cost of some o-rings and some seals. 8)

Dennis has always been nice on the phone and like Anthony said, he is entertaining for sure.

Now Andy, My experience with linden an Innuendo would be the same as some one who had good experience calling ABSOLUTSECRITY post false or an Innuendo. If you feel the need to recommend post from others as Innuendo than you should come with some facts about it that would falsify there comments. Instead of trying to smear them in this write up. You should have just keep it out of this write up. Gee in Dennis last post I thought he was no longer working Unimogs. Words just words
There has been a lot of negative innuendo posted here about LinDen Engineering

I have to say the good thing about Dennis was just how much he would put himself out for others without any possible chance of any reward or payback. He discovered by chance from someone else, that I needed information for my TGB13, he went to a lot of trouble to find out the information for my benefit and then posted it to me, so saving me a lot of effort and time. Their was nothing in it for himself. To my mind that was a real friendly thing to do. I just wished that his truck business was a little closer and without all that water in between. One does not have to agree with everything someone has said to respect or value them. I am sure Andy, if your ever in need of any help or anything for your truck or what ever that he would help you out.

No, I'm not going to keep good things out of my posts. I'm not trying to stir things up, but there are new faces here that might not have had the opportunity to become familiar with the man. Notice I used the word man, not god. I'm sure Dennis is just as fallible as you, me and the rest of the world. But that my friend doesn't change the fact that he is a good mechanic and goes out of his way to help people when there is no benefit to him.

The same freedom of speech I defended for 32 years in one form or another which allows people here to tear someone down allows me to build them up if I think they deserve it. I think he deserves it. And 9 differrent Pinzgauers at the shop for one reason or another does constitute proof of good workmanship and business practices in my book.

Not that it is anyone's business, but you didn't find any postings by me here regarding Absolute Securitys woes with parts. That's because I'm one of the "old farts" from pre internet who believes that you praise in public and criticise in private. Glenn got my message.

End of rant.

Dennis doesn't post here anymore. He is regularly over on difflock.com FWIW, he is always a gentleman when I need anything from him. Nothing but good stuff and always helpful on the phone. So, another plug for Linden Engineering from Iowa.

Hey Andy....glad to see you and Yvonne had a great time with Dennis and Linda..I too had a great experience with them. I see we are extending our pinzgauering along with another venture..glad to have you and Yvonne on the TEAM.

Anyway back to your 712 - she looks great. I know when I was traveling back from Blue mounds WI - I had a few problems (nothing major) and Dennis was the go to guy and he talked me through everything right there while I was pulling things apart. His knowledge is NUTS to say the least. Take a 32 mm wrench...you see the eye bolt..remove that and under is a flat washer with a rubber ring...well it went something like that anyway.

I had a friend here replace the seal and the boot on my Pinz and Dennis talked him through it all. He also gives his time...which he has none of...so freely it's amazing and heart warming to see that in todays society. And what he is doing for his mechanics there...well you can ask him about that.

No this is not a plug, but this is a general heart found thank you from the guy in the Yukon and now hopefully a life long friend of Dennis and Linda and their great kids.

So Andy enjoy and maybe I will see you and Yvonne and Dennis and Linda at a function or malfunction soon ok :D

Jer, you are so right, Dennis has no time, but he manages to make it somehow.

I didn't go into detail about the guys he has working for him earlier and probably should have. I didn't see any incompetence with them either and all of them are quite friendly and open.

After having read some of the postings here I wondered about them. After watching what all was going on and what all they were doing, the conclusion I came to is that they are nameless/invisible people to some of the customers, much like custodians and others in big cities. It's a shame really.

Dennis, for the most part, had two Native Americans working on my trucks. Great guys. There were a couple of "gringos" working on them too. Also good people. One, has post trumatic stress and the other was a real young guy, doing electrics, who is in school. Both of them were knowledgeable and functional also. If they (any of the worker bees) had a problem they went to Dennis or Dennis came by and checked progress and gave advice or direction as needed. Dennis wasn't just sitting around either, he was getting his hands dirty too and taking calls. I was comfortable with the work all his guys were doing. I'm sure Dennis has insurance regulations, but his isn't a place where they hide behind that and make you sit somewhere so you can't see what is or isn't being done to your vehicle.

Ref: the TEAM. I always wondered what your internet business was. Great stuff. Yvonne is doing most of it right now along with her day job.

Looking forward to meeting you some day at a function.
