Pinzgauer 710K vs Land Rover 101 FC Radio Body

Post by spandit »

For those of you who, like me, were interested in the size differences between the 710 and the 101 but had never seen them side by side, I took the opportunity to take these photos at the weekend:

Didn't get to climb inside the 101, but it's certainly a bit taller and makes the Pinz look sleek in comparison!

Don't know how good the 101 is off-road but if it's anything like a normal Land Rover it must be pretty good. Ground clearance not as good as the Pinz but my Defender 90 was pretty tidy on road tyres in unmodified condition. Must have taken them all of 20 minutes to design, mind :D

Surprisingly, the 101 has a full time 4x4 system, similiar to the Range Rover of the same time... it wasn't until the Stage 1's that the rest of the Land Rovers got the full time system, later to become the 110s and then the 90s ( later to have the Defender name badge)

Not nearly as good as the Pinzgauer!
I towed one up a hill once which I didn't consider that difficult.

I've 4WDrive'd with a number of 101's in the Land Rover Owners Club of Victoria over the years and the 101 can't mix it with the Pinny in the rough. The leaf spring suspension doesn't offer a lot of articulation and without factory diff locks they soon flounder....not that the Pinzgauer has a lot of suspension travel either, but pull on the two or three diff locks and you enter a whole new world.

If your going hard 4WDriving take the Pinny (especially a 712) but the 101 does make a great touring vehicle.

I have friends who use them for outback travelling and they are excellent in that role, especially when equipped with a camper back. Even the stock 3.5 V8 101 will outrun and out accelerate a Pinzgauer on the highway and when you put a souped-up later model 4.6 V8 in, look out.

I was looking at one for cheap($6500) with a perkins diesel and was considering that even though I really want a pinz the price was almost half of a pinz. I'll just keep saving I guess.

I used these 101,s as Radio Bodied vehicles in the Army (Royal Corps of Signals) they were better off road than a Series 3, but only because of the big ground clearance from the 9.00x16 Bar Grips. Fuel consumption was always a consideration, yes they do motor along and can cover ground quite rapidly, but in the Forest down little lanes, they are big and square compared to the Pinz,z neat and square. A 101 with aftermarket Difflocks would be something on the right tyres, I once had a go in a 101 with a Perkins Phaser (I think it was a 4 Litre turbo diesel) which was rapid and economical. Is it me but it is only when you see them together that you can visualise the difference in size....the Pinz is so impressive/imposing that it always looks bigger than it is. For those who know the vehicles I always thought that a 101 was almost in the same league as the old 50,s Austin K9 Radio Wagons we also used!! (size wise that is)(sorry - for those interested google the K9 there are loads of pics out there.)
