Pulling with Pintle

I was wondering how solid the pintle hitch is for long term, highway speed towing? I know there is the conversion hitch out there for the truck, but if someone was going to dedicate a trailer to the Pinz, could you not just convert the trailer to accommodate the pintle?

I know they sell after-market pintle recievers for trailers, but how hard it is to install depends on how handy you are I guess. I think the advantage to keeping the pintle hitch is that it is designed for off-road use and allows better articulation.

I've towed an original Swiss trailer from Denver to Madison, and a US M416 trailer all over Wisconsin with my 712. I was hardly even aware that they were back there. Considering that they also tow easily off-road with the pintle hitch, I can't really imagine much advantage to switching over to a standard ball type hitch. Unless the trailer is an issue, I'd keep the pintle hitch.

Limited articulation with the combo hitches

You'll get limited articulation with any fixed pintle....and yes the bolt pattern does match the Pinny. It's a standard/common bolting pattern!

I guess if you want full movement you'll need a rotating hitch like you'll find on Military LR's etc, but I've never seen a rotating combo hitch.....that's not to say they are not out there.

I think the problem with the combo, as well as the stock pintle, is that I cannot drop down to meet my motorcycle trailer. The Pinz is just too high.

Their is a compromise to everything you put back there if it is a combo. Personally I have went to a 3" square reciver (not a noormal size) and have both a pintle and ball unit that fits it. It is rated as a class 4 (10,000lbs)

A problem I experienced with the combo hitch when I used one on my gen 1 Montero was when towing a ball hitch trailer you need to unbolt and remove the top clamp as the trucks rear door could not be opened with the clamp in the open position.

I have not mounted my combo hitch on my Pinz however it sure looks like it would have the same problem.

There is a dropped down ball hitch for the Pinz that I have seen on a few in pics and I have seen it for sale on ebay as well. Keep your eyes open and maybe you can find one of those.

Had a combo to pull my M416A trailer. The trailer had a spring over setup to make it ride high as the pinz. No issues as the combo is based on the US style lunettes. The US style lunett does not fit very well in the stock pinz pintle and one would be advised to change it out. With the US style pintle and lunette there is plenty of movement for medium offloading.
