Paint help

Post by TechMOGogy »

One of these days/weeks/months I will be ready to paint my Hafi.
Single stage or base + clear?
I have no clue which is better so any help would be great!
Thanks,
Dan

Single stage is easy to touch up, would have been the way it was painted originally and looks better IMHO.
Use a heavy duty paint that can take abuse like an Ameron paint.
Unless your idea of a paint job is to make it a trailer queen show truck an epoxy single stage paint on a utilty truck like a Hafi is an excellent choice.

The important thing is the type of coating, not how many stages. High gloss Urethane enamels like House of Colors are a basecoat / clearcoat, but the same thing, a Urethane enamel as used by the military / industry is a basecoat / topcoat system with no clear, usually using an epoxy coat as the basecoat. It just depends what level of durability and UV resistance you want. Generally the stock paint was Alkyd enamel, the cheapest, Acrylic enamel is tougher but costs more and the most durable, what the military uses on ships, vehicles and aircraft is Urethane Enamel. The Ameron previously mentioned actually is / was a Urethane enamel, but now it's sold under the PPG brand after PPG bought them out.

Imron is a popular choice for work vehicles like fire equipment and public works trucks.

BUT it's very heavy with VOCs and many shops will not paint with it due the the health concerns.
When we spray it at our shop, we get complaints re: the smell, which vented out our paint booth stacks (40 feet high) can be smelled hundreds of yards away. We paint 99% in PPG Aquabase, and the neighbors are quick to forget that it used to smell every day.

Another option is an "Engine Bay" variant of the color you want, which is a tint heavy mix applied single stage, and can be buffed similarly to "classic " paints when scratched. It's a bit of work to buff it after application to get the texture you want. We paint a lot of steel wheels with that type of mix and I'd looks very "stock."

Every paint system has myriad options for application. If you have one shop you trust, talk with the painter directly. Our painter loves getting "different" application projects, and will bring our Jobber into the project sometimes, just to çover all the options.

PPG's Ameron products are polysiloxane and contain little VOC's compared to the traditional marine coatings. This stuff is so tuff that it has been used on US government war ships, tug boats, mining machinery, oil derrics, football stadiums and even NASA equipment. The cost per gallon is definatly cheaper than high end automotive paints and can withstand some major abuse.

Are you planning on making a 2x4 and poly tarp paint booth or are you sending it to a shop?

2x4 poly paint booth - I got this little guy so I could work on it so I don't want to farm out the work
Truck will be back to its original green color (to collectible now to bastardize it) not looking for a FOOSE paint job just rust free, clean and smooth and I will be happy.
Now the Pinz... well that will be another story

I spoke to our painter about your project. Since you plan on doing it yourself, he suggests PPG Deltron Essential as its single stage, low(ish) VOC and has reasonable coverage characteristics. It will look like the stock paint, won't be too difficult to apply, and won't cause your valuable brain and nerve cells to die.

Imron should not be painted in a hobby booth.
I'm my discussion with the painter, he told me that we CAN'T spray Imron at our facility anymore, since we are now state certified for low VOC, and just the act of spraying that gnarly stuff could get us in trouble.

It's no great loss really. It's really toxic crap.

Lots of issues with toxic paint and stages. Try the rattle can cammo paint from WalMart, it's less than $5 per can, will always match and you can paint the whole pinz for
less than $25. If you are taking it in the brush and it's not a show vehicle, what's all the fuss about?

This thread was about painting my Haflinger original green (L511 Birch Green)
For a Pinz I agree
I perhaps should have put it in the Hafi section but figured I would get more views/comments here

Ah, yes more comments here. In keeping with the size of the Hafi...you will need two less rattle cans.
