New Halflinger owner

Post by JTM35A2 »

I just picked up this Halflinger Pathfinder 700AP, titled as a 1973. It was a garage find. Supposedly had a fresh engine when parked, but has no brakes. Zero rust. Also came with 3 sets of tires and wheels ( skinny ag type, wide ag type, & street tires). There are doors in the back of the bed, and guessing the hardtop isn't original. Included was 2 large factory service manuals and clean title. Is there a "common" failure item in the brake system? The pedal goes to the floor with no resistance? Where can brake system parts be purchased? I am a military M35A2 guy, and like the looks of the little pathfinder, but if I decide against keeping, and decide to sell......what are these things worth?

Maybe $50. Tell you what, I'll double your money and come pick her up, spare tires and all!! Sorry, too early in the morning for me to be right.

There are a few of us M35-type guys here too. At least one guy here has been known to race 'em...

I can't help you with your Haffie questions, but I'm sure others will chime in as the day goes on. Nice find, and welcome to the forum.

Welcome to the forum!
Fill our your location so we know where you are located and can let you know any possible local resources!
Glad to see another Pathfinder - have not see that one - being saved!
Hardtop would not be original
Brakes - it is like a normal car from the 70's (think VW bug or bus) - most likely rotted lines but could be master (single stage) or any of the wheel cylinders.
Parts can be purchased from Scott at Expedition Imports or from SAV

http://www.pinzgauer.com/parts.php?cat=haflinger&id=284
for some parts you may need to go overseas to Haflinger Technik or Robert in Austria

As for what it is worth - hard to say right now as you'll have to verify the motor is not seized up etc etc but to give you a wide range:
Rust buckets can go anywhere from $200 to a few thousand and a nice original one can go for $12 - 16k
I have not seen a fully restored one sell - but ultimately it is all up to who is looking to buy at the time and how much they are willing to spend.
The Pathfinder is a very rare model as only 212 were brought in for the US market
I would recommend looking through the Haflinger section of the forum - lots of great info.
Dan
ps - we (ok I) want to see more pictures - looks to be a 72 model most likely registered in 73

Nothing unusual about the braking system - much of it is a mix of VW type parts - but the correct / original parts are available from Swiss Army Vehicles, Expedition-Imports and Haflinger-Technik in Scotland. Some parts show up on ebay as well.

Your problem could be a bad master cylinder - but if the lines set for a while empty I would plan on a complete rebuild including all the cylinders, hard lines and hoses in order to prevent further problems down the road. Its a single circuit type system - so any problem leaves you with no brakes!

Nice find - especially the ag wheels - I want a set of those!

Where are you located?

I will complete my profile , but I am in Granite Falls, N.C. . I have known and trust the previous owner and was told it had been fired up monthly, until the battery went dead 6 months ago.

If the brake pedal moves back and forth with zero resistance - i.e. the pedal does not appear to be touching / pushing on anything. Most likely the master cylinder piston has seized at the bottom of the master cylinder.

If you feel some resistance, like it is pushing against a spring, then the problem is likely to be else where. Probably wheel slave cylinders.

If it has been standing for any length of time. It would be prudent to replace the WHOLE of the braking system with new parts. Original metal pipes rust, original flexible hoses perish and can turn into "one way valves" and lock wheel cylinders on. The Haflinger will drive with a locked on wheel cylinder with no trouble - except the brake drum will get very hot and it might eventually seize or spill brake fluid all over the place.

Wheel cylinders can leak either due to seals failing or brake shoes being so worn that the piston push out beyond the seals ability to work.

yes, the pedal goes to the floor and back with zero resistance/pressure. I saw where a vw bug master cylinder will work on the halflinger. Are there any other cross parts for the wheel cylinders, brake lines ,etc..? I had initially bought this strictly to resell, but ever since loading it on the trailer and bringing it home, it seems to be growing roots. The big army trucks are taking it in also, kinda like an orphan.
