New member with old 712M
Re: New member with old 712M
Looks like a nice set up Jim. Thanks for posting it.
My friend's work truck has a bench on one side, sliding drawers on the other. There is a large opening window above the work bench (needs sealing).

Measurements of the vents for Dan.
The vent base (outer ring) is level with the top of the bumper.
Note my bumper and front of truck is a bit dented so take all of these measurements with a grain of salt.
The LHS side vent is critical, it has to clear the hydraulic pipes inside. You can see from the photo the lever arm used to open the vent doesn't have much clearance.
The RHS vent is not in the same spot and not critical (nothing inside).
The LHS vent seems to be 25mm (1 inch) from the fold line outer edge (not the fold centre line).

Re: New member with old 712M
Been busy buying up parts. Got a SSI kit on the way, new locker lever, carb ball joint connectors, and a few small other bits from SAV.
Locally I have bought an ignition switch, starter button, 2 batteries, battery terminals, battery jumper cable, fuel filter, fuel hose and wheel stud nuts to mount the spare.
Installed all the local items over 2 nights, and just had the old girl turning over. Of course with no spark or fuel there was no combustion, but good to see something working and the engine is not seized. Headlights and hazard lights work but no indicators.
Still need to identify the 3 loose wires near the starter button. One should be for the carb fuel cut outs I think. Need to study the wiring diagram and hope my circuit matches. I have fuses and not circuit breakers, I recall that was a difference between Austrian and Swiss trucks.
My SSI kit has made it across USA to my NY address, now just to get half way across the world.

Pinz SSI is in and working. Here is a crappy video from phone :

Fuel pump has been removed, cleaned, new gaskets and will be back in this weekend.
Carb rebuild kits arrived today and they will go in the ultrasonic bath this weekend.
Need to get this truck running soon because summer is on the way, and 45-50C temps (113-122F) make it hard to work on outside.

Re: New member with old 712M
Just was looking for a pop-out type vent for a friend's rig - and I found this source for them - lots of different sizes, both steel and aluminum:

Here are some pics:

I always thought about putting one on the air cooling tunnel behind the grill on the driver's side so it would fresh dump air onto my legs. I like that location better as I worry about catching them if one was mounted on the normal "outside corner" of the front end as I drive through a lot of berry bushes and brush in the summers.
Any thoughts about that location?

Re: New member with old 712M
The only downside that I can think of is that after the engine is good and warmed up, when shut down a fair amount of heat escapes out the tunnel if there is no breeze... this would put hot air into the cab if you didn't shut the vent. Depending on your climate, that could be good or bad.thought about putting one on the air cooling tunnel behind the grill on the driver's side

Re: New member with old 712M
Good point... still might do it though. Easy enough to close it - probably could do it with my foot even.
Other idea was to put one on the angled area of the "nose" such as behind the locker / 4wd levers - air would then flow to both sides - sort of right where the badge is. Some concern about water getting in through it - but there it would drain to the floor boards.
My truck is far from original at this point so I am not too concerned about modifying it - but I understand why others might not want to...

Huh - Some how I missed that thread or forgot about it... probably where I got the idea from!
The butterfly type vents look good as well - they wouldn't stick out to catch your foot on either. The price is good also - especially since they are stainless and the offer an optional screen for them too.
Thanks!

Re: New member with old 712M
The butterfly vents are an easy solution to drawing more air into the cab...but, take note, they don't seal air tight. ...there are enough holes and air flowing through the pinz that a bit more might not be noticed. It may be noticed in the winter though. I made a cover for mine from some camo material I had and sewed in some magnets to hold it on in the winter.
I only installed a vent on the drive side.
