That sounds like a problem for sure. I hope not to have the same issue. I had about 13 gallons in my tank. Siphoned out approximately 8 gal, and the light came on. Seems about right, although it's hard to say how much of the remaining fuel is actually usable.

Do you have an idea what the gauge should read with about 5 gal left in the tank?
It would be nice to calibrate the gauge on the low side instead of the high.
I would guess just below the first tick, but really have no idea.

Hard to say. You have a more recent VDO gauge, so you may just have to experiment with it.

After transferring fuel back and forth this morning with my electric pump can say that the low fuel light comes on at +/-5 gallons of usable fuel left in the tank. So I adjusted my gauge as close to zero as I could get at 5 gal using the low fuel light.

That actually sounds about right, given it's a 20-gal tank. I had it stuck in my head that it was a 32-gal tank from my Unimog days. (OOPS)
I have calibrated my fuel gauge to read zero at the 5-gallon mark when the light comes on. Yes, it's the same as yours and I will have to add another gas can as well.

I hung my Jerry can holder on the Right side of the read door.

If you put one there, add a steel backing plate on the inside to
prevent weight and vibration from fracturing the thin upper
deck sheet metal.

Great idea on the backing plate/doubler. I will have to think about which side to put the can. I have seen some with 2 cans on the back, one on either side of the door.

Looks like my 2 stage defender jack will do for now, with the help of some 2X6's.
Its a little short for the stock mount straps, but it will do until I decide to spend the cash for a better Jack.

After looking at pictures on the forum, I like the idea of a second gas can mount on the left side under the 710K door. The only issue I see is the exhaust pipe in that location. It looks like there is just enough room to squeeze it in. I will see as the project develops. If I want more spare fuel, adding two more cans on the back would net 20 gal. The question is, how much is enough?

More a possibility if you are in a rocky craggy area I suppose. I do have a
couple of Jerry's that have darn good dents in them from just that, they
now don't leave the garage.

I don't know if you found the link below, it was pretty obscure "gas can holder"
There is also a link there for the holder I bought. And I forgot to inc the backing
bolster plate in that write-up.

I do agree, spilled fuel is always an issue. I switched to the NATO-style fuel cans up in Alaska, as they work so much better than the US-style cans. They have never leaked a drop in years. I could never get the US style to stop leaking. I have used the basket-style can holders on some Land Rovers. The only issue I have had is the cans swelling up in the sun and jamming in the holders. The cut-down "Jeep" style doesn't have that problem, but they don't hold the can as securely.

Ya, I only use genuine NATO (Wavian) cans as well.

Expansion at altitude can be a pain. I remove the safety pin
and if need be I can pop the top with the can in place to
depressurize so it can be removed.

I was able to modify the Pinzgauer Axe mount a little and add a clamp. It now holds my old trusty Estwing hatchet nice and secure in the passenger foot well.

Starting to think about a winch mount. I have seen several that allow retention of the stock bumperettes. Most of the traffic on the site is pretty dated. Unfortunately, I'm late to the party, but who is still making something like this one? (not my photo)

Here are a few photos of K fuel and water can placement as food for thought. I’ve been running a second underbody NATO can on the driver’s side for 7–8 years now without issue.

A few caveats, though:
  1. Rock crawling is not the primary mission of my Pinz.
  2. The exhaust is routed down and away from the can to make room for it.
  3. The can is housed in an exoskeleton/guard that also doubles as a step into the K doors.

That one was built for me by Andre at Fat Fabrications. I understand that Andre is contending with some health issues at the moment. If he's unable to assist, then I would point you toward 3saurus who is local to me and has access to the design in order to replicate it.
