Since you were there Mark, did you see any info on this rig? Their site is pushing diesel conversions....

I think that site has a picture of my ex Croatia Trophy racing 712 on it with an extended hard top. Anyone know who has it now and what has been done to it? I've lost touch with everyone out west.

Vince, it would make you sad to see it, I'll see if I can find you a picture

People forget that a Jetta weighs around 3300lbs, and has a 1100 lb payload capacity... adding up to 4300 lbs fully loaded. Which is still less than a 710 before you put someone in the driver seat., let alone fully loaded at 6600lbs ( and the aerodynamic of a rock against the wind).. All that extra weight takes power to moves, and extra energy, which translate to more heat. In the case of the 716 P80, it used a 2.4TD engine, which is the same VW engine as used by Volvo throughout the 80's....I haven't heard of heating problems with them, but the early Pinz TDs had overheating problems that Steyr made no less than 4 changes to the cooling system. Also, as I have said many times before, 716/18 have completely different gearing in both the trans and T case to better suit the modern on road speeds, as well as maintaining it's off road prowess. People converting to the OD trans from a 716/18 only increases a gasser Pinz on highway speed, at the expense of it's low offroad gearing, and the TD's T case will not fit a 710/12 because it's input is on the opposite side of the central tube..

Vince your old race truck has the hardtop from my 716K on it.

Vince,

Like Jim poasted it's not diesel, I ran into Stephan with this truck last year (2007) at a Vegas off road media show, and it was not as finnished as it appears now, while stephan tried to tel me it was a diesel conversion he had done using an iveco td I had looked under the truck earlier and saw it still had the stock engine in it, they were however pushing a td conversion for jeeps at their booth (off road logic) the workmanship on the hard cover both front and rear was very good, stephan himself told me others did all the fabrication he only did design work...lol (better product if this is true) the owner of off road logic tried his best to sell me the truck for $72,000.00 back then, pic below, I will tell you that I was warned to wear hip waders when around stephan and the warnings were accurate thats for sure.

Interesting. I wonder who supplied the diesel information to the magazine.

I really like the side mirrors shown in the pictures on T-Lo's for sale ad! I wonder how much the exoskeleton weighs?

I saw the truck at T-Lo's and it is very nice, but as it is stated in his page, the truck is not finished....

"Since some items on this vehicle still need finishing, this truck has been garaged at all times.
The items which need finishing are: Interior paneling and headliner; Air conditioning wiring etc.; and the wiring of the auxiliary exterior lights."

Herr Stefan probably was out goose-stepping as usual and slipped on a pile of dog poop hitting his head and causing amnesia--he probably doesn't remember the first thing about Pinzgauers and for that matter trucks or automobiles. The only reliable way to determine if his memory is intact is to see if he shows up to celebrate his buddy Adolph's birthday at some brew pub on April 20th. Don't ask me to elaborate

Cheers,
Greg

On my last visit to Prescott to see him, Thilo had it in his shop on consignment as I recall.

I don't know the fellow in question, but those testimonials are from '07 and '08.

Just a note on Diesel conversion cooling problems. In a word YES and it,s all down to that tiny air tunnel. As some will know I have been running a 710K with a Mercedes OM602 (5 cyl) and the gearbox from the Mercedes Sprinter it came from. In UK I had no problems even one day completing a 500Mile motorway trip with no cooling problems (and at a carefully calculated 32MPG Imperial). But here in Eastern Poland, all steep hills and much hotter than UK on average all through summer, it has been a good idea to keep a constant eye on the temp guage. I have also added an extra 5 ltrs of coolant to the circulation and that just about keeps on top of it. I have only admiration for the Conversion because it was done by the Pinzmeister and it is so very well engineered. I have seen pics of VW TDI conversions and IVECO TDI 2.8Ltr conversions, I think one has an external radiator (IVECO) behind a big grid, and the VW TDI has an internal radiator behind the driver. both are faster than mine, but both are Turbos....mine is a slug, but is reliable to a fault, starts after 10 secs of glow plug even in minus 17C. Nigel,s idea is sound... drop in a good 'fore and aft' engine and its gearbox and you only have to think of engine mounts and joining the Pinz 'prop' to it. No nasty conversion plates etc. I wouldn,t think of any other diesel engine for my Pinz, this OM 602 is ideal......for THIS area and my useage, if I had to make many motorway journeys then I would have to try some way of fitting the turbo version of this engine simply so it could tackle hills a bit better at higher speeds. (I suspect it would mean some special pipework to put the turbo a bit futher down the pipe than it is 'stock'). Again extra cooling maybe needed, perhaps a custom radiator. I,m always happy to answer on forum and by e.mail any questions honestly, about this conversion and how it runs, But unless you are as good an engineeer as 'The Pinzmeister' yours may not be as fault free as mine was/is.
