I had another day in Kielder Forest on Saturday. These are mainly from the Pinzi:

I had a weekend away at a big off road site in Drumclog - a few miles south of Glasgow. Quite muddy in places. I had one big stuck which filled one of my wheel hubs with mud and the hub seal was dead by the time I got home. I put a new one in last weekend.

Today I went for a bit of a mooch around Hadrian's wall. The weather was bad (well it is summer so what would you expect?) but the scenery, geology and history were good:

In the last picture, where it says, "unsuitable for motor vehicles", is that the remnant of the wall on the right? Sure is green there.

Hi Andy. The byway in these pictures runs along the Vallum - a Roman ditch-plus-bank earthwork which was constructed to the south of the main wall. You can see it just to the left of the track on the second photo and on the right hand side of the "unsuitable for motor vehicles" one. The wall itself can be seen in the first photo - it runs along the top of the Whin Sill crags. The other thing that you can just about see in that photo is a tree growing in the gap between the two rock faces. This tree, at "sycamore gap", is quite famous as it was used as a location for the Robin Hood film which starred Kevin Kostner.

The Vallum shows up really well in this next photo. I'm on the byway. The uneven ground in the foreground is the remains of the earthworks. The wall is on the ridgeline in the distance, although you can't see it from this angle.



It might be greener here but I bet it's warmer in Texas!

I think most Aussies would kill for grass that green given the current drought!

BTW...Maybe you should have some stickers made that you can add to those signs:

"Unsuitable for motor vehicles"

Hey Peter - water is one thing that we're not short of up here, although there are also parts of the UK where you can't say that these days. I guess it's a lot worse in Oz though.

Bryn, very interesting stuff. If that was here, there would be all sorts or souvenir vendors and a McDonald's probably in front of the sycamore.

Thanks for the pictures and the mini geography/history lesson. It is hard to imagine how life was in those times.

Bryn, from the looks of it TS Hanna may bring you all some more liquid by the end of the week. We get very heavy rains here sometimes, but they lass a finite amount of time and are usually spaced months apart. I guess it's all in what you get used to.
