In 2005 I discovered that while my Pinz got decent gas mileage on the road the safety, mileage, comfort trade off of towing on a trailer far outweighs any investment in improving mileage or comfort.
I now now tow my Pinz to off-road destinations. This results in minimal wear and tear on the drive train and tires. Now that I tow, I find myself trying more difficult obstacles. Needless to say, I have a winch on the front of my trailer. It has never been used to pull MY Pinz up yet but one of these days. I have towed home a few less capable and reliable vehicles however.
When I drove my Pinz instead of trailering I had one tank that I was darn close to 20 mpg. The next fill-up was also nearly the same MPG so I don't think it was a math problem. Now I measure my mileage in gallons per hour. Well worth it still. A fill-up will last a few outings of being towed to events and the comfort and safety make up for the investment on any long haul.
