There's a lot of space between first and second.

Just to chip in with a slight correction.

I have this 711.113 gearbox in my G-Wagen (although it is most commonly out of the Mercedes-Benz T1 Van range) and the ratios are:

1st 4.695
2nd 2.401
3rd 1.436
4th 1.0
5th 0.806
Rev 4.078

Still a big jump from 1st to 2nd though!

The water sealed version of this box (which is actually from the G-Wagen) is the 711.117 while there is also a 711.116 that has a crawler 1st gear of 6.157; a 2nd gear of 3.148 and a 1:1 5th gear.

I hope that this helps.

John
Thanks for the correction I got the info from wykapedia.

Just so you get it from my experience, that big difference in 1st and 2nd is not too bad in practice. I use 1st on any steep slope pull away on the road and on the flat use 2nd to pull away. I had previously noted that the drivers of Mercedes Sprinter vans with this engine always seemed to be revving hard when pulling away, it seems it is a characteristic of this (non tubo) engine that to get the best out of it, you thrash it away from the lights/junctions etc, if you do that then the performance is quite reasonable, try to drive like a more mature and stately person and you will be overtaken by snails, etc I find that with this (Van) gearbox, the low range is certainly nowhere near as low as my standard 69 Series 2A Landrover, but I have still never found any hill mud or dry where the low range is not 'Low' enough. (Please bear in mind that I have never driven a Petrol (gas) engined Pinz with a standard G/box and have nothing to compare mine with. As I have said before if they did a non-electronic version of this engine running a turbo, I would consider it, not for top speed, but just for powering up long hills on the road. (The Pinzmeister has noted that this would put a red hot turbo uncomfortably close to the passenger side engine cover) But I would love to try something in the future if I could rig some adequate shielding. At the moment I am happy with 85/90Kmh cruising and 100kmh if I want to push past something.
