Read some of the past posts on insuring Pinzgauers. David Dunn has provided many useful insights into addressing insurance and licensing issues, remember no mention of military, seats up for dmv, no mention of tonnage, etc.. After it’s just a funny looking SUV.

Funny, I think it really all depends on your broker's influence here in the north. My guys didn't care if it was Military, para military or extra terrestrial.....they just didn't know what the hell it was.
When I described it as an ex military troop carrier, that could convert to a pickup truck, which could be altered into a camper, and used as a tent...or a.......you get it....they gave up and just asked how much I paid. Done.

That's what I love about Ontario....if they don't understand, all you have to do is smile a lot, make a couple jokes and tell them what "you think" they should write down....lol.....

As for licensing it, the fact that it came from Montreal just meant that it was pretty much exempt from everything!!!

The pain in buying a vehicle like this from Quebec, which is where my Iltis was from, is that they have Provincially funded insurance, so they seem to cover everything, which is not true elsewhere. Who would have thunk that PRIVATE insurance would be so much more restrictive and unyielding. They also do not need to re-safety a used vehicle when sold between two people in Quebec, making transfers almost simple, again, not the case elsewhere.

All that red tape removed...

I have owned two Iltis's and a 710M. Comparing the two is really apples and oranges. The Iltis is a better road vehicle with its speed and gearing, like a car, but the approach and decent angles are a real problem off-road. On serious technical trails, an Iltis just gets really hung up and beat up. The same trail, a Pinz can do without breaking a sweat.

Thanks! I was hoping there was someone out there who owned both. Ya, the Iltis will run at 120KM/H without issue, but I am more interested in off-road abilities. The 710M is looking better and better.

From the videos I have seen of the VW and Bomb Iltis, the lack of a front locker seems to hurt it. The Belgian Bomb Iltis had a rear diff placed in the front making it lock too.

You can also carry almost as much as an Iltis weighs in a Pinz, and that's off road too, not to mention you can sleep in the back, comfortably.

Ya, that is what really attracts me too. I used to Whitewater Kayak a lot (boat is 6'5 long), and I used to sleep in the back of my capped F-150. The Pinz could get me overland to some nice play spots, carry my boat and give me a place to crash!

Let me tell you..I cant find anything I dont like about the pinz...oh maybe just one thing I stand 6foot2 and wish the windshield was 3 inches higher as far as line of sight is concerned, other than that it is a perfect vehicle good for a run to home depot to pick up a bunch of plywood, or a ton of pellets, or a camp ground with a air mattress in the back or 8 or your best friends in the back going to the superbowl in style....its so versitile...I love it!

I have to ask...I am 6', but I am not "thin,"... ...any issue for us horizontally challenged sitting behind the steering wheel???
