Yeah, what is your research and what crazy places are you going? Need a convoy? Don't have to answer that; I'm hijacking.

Might look at the VW Syncro Westfalia.

Agreed on the westy synchro. All the 4x4 stuff on them are made by the company that made pinzgauers.
I would just want to do a motor swap for Subaru heart.

Westy Syncro prices are crazy high - with or without a subaru swap. I've had two friends build their own - one started with a syncro and added the westy to it and the other started with a westy and added the syncro to it. Both approaches are a lot of work.
At least there are used parts around and there actually are several aftermarket engine swap companies - the sunaru is not the only option - diesel VW TDI, Audi and Ford Zetec...
If you want to see a good sample of syncros - come up to the NW MogFest in Oregon in August - its become an event for Syncro's as well - they usually outnumber the rest of the makes and many of them play in the pit with some impressive results...

A Subaru swap is the easest as it is a pancake engine like the wasserboxer that comes in them. Parts are readly available and cheap.
To have a swap done by a shop it is 10K.
Advantages are, going from 98hp to 150+, gas milage from 18 to 24-26 and longevity of the engine from 100,000 to 250,000.
The Ztec is a good option as well as they are relitvly inexpensive, and are the most produced engine in the world, found on every contenent. I have no personal experiance with them though.
And yes as Chris said come to NW Mogfest and you will see alot of them in full action.

I called Scott about the 718 he had listed and was told it is currently under contract. I am also looking to buy a 718M, and have asked Scott to help locate and import one for me. Having bought three vehicles from him (one located and imported from Belgium), I would happily recommend dealing with EI to anyone. Scott is a great guy, and he treats you right. Give him a call. Who knows, maybe our 718's can share a container!
