Quick Update and a word of Advice to all Pinzgauer owners:

Many Wisconsin Pinzers have been reregistered.

However, I just learned that a Milwaukee owner is reportedly having problems with the WisDOT (Surprise!). It sounds like they're requiring importation documentation, though I've not spoken directly with the owner yet.

Importers, Dealers: Please make sure you're complying with the record retention requirments and provide all buyers with copies, if possible.

Pinz Buyers/Owners: Don't get rid of any paperwork pertaining to the import of your truck, previous titles, etc. KEEP COPIES.

IF the WisDOT manages to make Pinzgauers illegal (read: too damn hard to get a title/license for), it may well spread to other states too.

I guess this isn't over, yet.

Leave it to the coniving bureaucrat SOB's to try to get their agenda in the backdoor. I hope you guys can get past them with the new legislation.

I got word yesterday that the Milwaukee area owner finally received his title/plates for his truck.

To my knowledge, all Wisconsin-owned Pinzgauers are now titled and licensed.

If anyone has more problems like this, please feel free to call or write to me. I can't make any promises, of course, but I'll provide any information and/or documents I've got.

I'll post word on any legislation as it happens. I'm keeping an eye on the rulemaking DOT introduced. No progress, so far, from what I can tell.

One more update.... Sorry.

Just received word today that another Wisconsinite is picking up a Pinz this coming weekend.

Also that a current Pinz owner has just taken delivery of his second truck. He was told by DMV personnel that the "Pinzgauer Issue" had been resolved, and he'd just need a title to transfer ownership - like everyone else!

OH GOD NO!!!

I REALLY, REALLY did not want this thread to be revived.

An Email last night from the DOT attorney informed me that they are conducting a public hearing on July 29, 2009 to proceed with their formal rulemaking (TRANS 123) which would require any Pinzgauer newly arriving in Wisconsin to be inspected by a Registered Importer and upgraded to meet FMVSS standards as needed. (PM me for copies if you want.)

These A-holes just won't stop.

I'm writing to notify all current and prospective Wisconsin Pinz owners (like any of you would still consider being "prospective" Wisconsinites!) of the issue.

Also, if anybody in other U.S. states might be willing to do some local DOT research, please PM me. I won't post any details of this here, as THEY read this forum too. (Hello P.N.)

Wisconsin DOT is not targeting just Pinzgauers nor military vehicles. According to the draft rule order that was provided by them, they are attempting to define how a vehicle is determined to be an on-road or off-road vehicle. This would apply to all military vehicles, US or imported, and other vehicles such as VW dune buggies, etc.

The primary issue, IMHO, with their draft rule is that they do not intend to honor the Federal exemption for vehicles older than 25 years when imported. If they would adopt that exemption as part of their rulemaking, we wouldn't have a problem. I, and I believe other owners, also would not have a problem having our vehicles brought up to a reasonable level of "roadworthiness", such as safety glass windshield, seatbelts, etc.

Not trying to defend the Wis DOT, just attempting to be fair about what they claim they are trying to accomplish in the public interest. For what it's worth, I think it is a tremendous waste of time and taxpayer's money.
