So does this also mean that out of state Pinzgauers are not allowed on Wisconsin roads? My Pinzgauer will soon have a permanent Lifetime tag from the military vehicle loving state of FL, as opposed to its current yearly renewal tag. I will never need to pay a registration fee again in FL for it.

Update; An anonymous friend, who works at WI DMV, swears it's a legislated issue, not an internal DMV decision. Email sent tonight to my legislative representative inquiring. Krauss Publications is not interested in this issue.(?)

I am doing the same to Senator Kedzie of my area. This may be the only route to go. All owners in WI should find out who thier senator or Rep is and send a letter ASAP.

In all honesty and sorry for these people, all owners of Hummer H1 should also be included in this new legislative for it to be correct. This might then want them to maybe change this legislative.

To clear one thing up, the H-1 and Humvee are not the same vehicle. The Humvee is a purpose made vehicle under military contracts and specs. The H-1 is civilian version that was built for the civilian market with all the DOT and EPA equipment and testing, and with such, has all the proper labels.

I don't really want to push things too far, so I'll try to minimize my driving for now. But yeah, I never really got that letter, yet.

The alleged letter

I got the same letter from the WI DMV. The day after I got the letter, I received my renewal notice for my license plate. So it seems that not everyone in the department is on the same page.

From previous experience of dealing with governmental agencies this would seem to be an administrative rule. Agencies such as the DMV and DNR can make administrative rules which carry the same weight as legislative law but never have to go before a representative body for ratification.

I plan to send a letter to my elected officials and request their assistance. Even though they may not be able to vote on this rule they do have the power to influence the DMV by controlling the DMV's budget. Also trying to identify any other groups or organizations which would be interested in this issue and may already have lobbying resources in place. Any suggestions? I thought maybe AAA, veterans groups, NRA, Car collectors.

If we could identify interested parties in Wisconsin then we could draft a letter or postcard that could be sent out with a preprinted card to be sent to their legislators. Legislators are influenced by the volume of mail they get on an issue.

For now, I do not plan to return my title. I will renew my plate and keep it current. By the way, my Pinz has been licensed and insured in Wisconsin for almost three years.

As of yet, only bad luck.
I'm in the midst of composing a letter to my Senator, trying to keep it brief enough to read, yet detailed enough to provide him with something to work on.
I'm also hoping to enlist (pun intended) the help of a neighbor, a retired AF Brig. Gen., to go visit a few folks in Madison. I figure it can't hurt the cause.
It might take a while. I received a copy of a letter from Sen. Ellis to the head of the DMV, dated 9/6/07, but reportedly there is no answer yet. DMV is trying to remove all "Historical Military Vehicles" from Wis. roads.

Here's a question to all of ya' - If Pinz owners from all 49 other states can legally drive their Pinzes on Wisconsin roads, why can't a legal taxpaying Wisconsinite do the same?

It ain't right. And for everyone else out there, what happens if/when this same s**t comes to YOUR state?

Thanks for everyone's support and interest. I am still trying to generate as complete a listing of Wisconsin Pinz owners as possible, to be able to act in unison if needed. I will continue to report on this issue as things change.

Relating your situation to other states is probably mute as any state can enact legislation so long as it doesn't counter fed legislation. Just ask anyone is CA that wants a/another AR-15. Another result that I would expect from our battles is that the existing "road-worthy titles" will be "grand-fathered" and any change will kick it out. If you try to sell it, the "road-worthy title" will be revoked for the new owner.
It is a difficult battle as, clearly, the prize is not a necessity and the people that you are fighting have no empathy and no motivation to be reasonable with their power. They are the new missionaries and they have laws instead of armies to force us to adopt their religion.
Against the weaknesses of man, there is no hope. But, let's have a clean fight and try to keep it above the belt.
