speedo cable/gearing

Wasn't sure where to put this, but this seems as good a place as any. Anyway, the speedometer on my pinz wasn't working. Through trial and error we've determined the problem is definitely somewhere in the actual drivetrain/transmission end. But... how do you get the gear housing out to check, without disassembling the entire transmission housing (no thank you)? Tried all sorts of tools – my guess is there's maybe a specialty Pinz tool for precisely this – but none would fit without making a cut or bend to the housing... which I'd rather avoid.

I have the same problem. There is a crown gear that is driven off the front differential and apparently it can come off or break a tooth. Anyway, from the manual, the only way to get to that plate on the front of the diff is to take off the front bumper, the supporting structure, and all the steering arms. Keep in mind I also have a winch mounted to the front bumper as well.
So, I have been getting by with a GPS mounted on the dash. I'll get to that crown gear some day, but not soon.

Well, that's aggravating. So much work for such a simple thing!

I hear you. At the same time, what are the odds that you violate many speed limits?

I have same problem. The only issue is getting it inspected. Speedo has to.work. Where I get it done , they don't want to test drive it. So I was OK for this year. But come Nov, milage is gonna show the same. How hard is it and how long does it take to repair? Is it always just the one gear, or is there an assembly that should be replaced?

Put the end of the cable into a drill and spin up the odometer with some miles - problem fixed!

Uh, yeah, other than that odometer tampering is a crime, if I'm not mistaken. No different than an inoperable odo, IMHO, in that it shows an incorrect reading. But I'm pretty sure you would be in worse trouble if you got caught changing the odo.
It'd also take you forEVER to rack up appreciable miles that way, like 60mph or so.

A drill will do it pretty quickly actually - and I am not advocating spinning it backwards - but forward to more accurately reflect the actual mileage on the vehicle while the drive gear is not working... Seems like that would not be illegal?

My ODO works and my speedo doesn't. I've learned to live with it.

Haf-e,
Spinning the speedo with a drill is how I figured out it was the gear and not the speedo.
BTW, here in Florida, the odometer will only be read if and when I sell the truck. Which is not likely soon. Even. So, with Pinz' it's condition, more than miles, that matters most.

OK, I guess I will step up to the plate and replace gear. I will try to document process unless someone else has done it. I ordered parts. When they get here, I will begin posting pictures.
