Went to check out the new IMAX film "Voyage of Time", which I highly recommend, and then checked out the space shuttle.

Now this is a tire! And wheel!

Sorry for the old phone quality pics

I think it was up in McMinnville, OR at the air and space museum, and they had a shuttle tire there -- something like 26 plies!

I read somewhere that should the Shuttle have needed to make an emergency landing in the area of Europe there was actually only one runway that could have taken the beast safely. That was RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire......it was long because that was where they did the initial testing of Concorde and they needed a good long runway in case of problems and the fact that they thought it might need twice the runway it eventually did to get off the ground and land safely. I used to live near that base and would regularly go to airshows there.

Dreadnought, I went to RAF Fairford once in my life for the "Air Tattoo" back in 1992 (time flies!!!), the only time I saw an Avro Vulcan and a B-52 take off. My definition of "noisy" changed that day...

Vince, is this the Shuttle that is on the deck of USS Intrepid in New York? I visited it last year, great exhibit. They have a couple of really cool tools that they used to fix the Hubble telescope, among all the displays.

Yeah this is the Ca. one. This one made all the news a while back when it was filmed being squeezed down Los Angeles streets.

Yup, and they pulled it (at least partway) with a stock Toyota Tundra: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AO37TSgKwSg

I think they did that because that bridge couldn't handle the weight of the shuttle plus the multi-wheel platform that hauls it around. They moved it onto this simpler trailer set-up and used a lightweight truck just for the bridge.
