Make your own float level gauge

You can make your own float level gauge for about $4

Image

First, buy a 7 X 1.0 bolt and 6" of 3/8" vinyl tubing. I bought mine at Ace Hardware. Also buy 1 or 2- 1/8" drill bits. You will probably use both.

Image

Near the end of the tube, put 2 marks 18.5 millimeters apart, as shown.

Image

Drill out the bolt, going past the threads at least 1/4".

Image

Cut off the bolt about 3/16" from the threads

Image

Put a dab of silicone sealer on the bolt and insert into the tube. Allow to dry a few minutes.

Image

Place several paper towels next to the carb and remove the starter jet screw. Caution- you will lose 2 ounces of gas!
Make sure that you don't lose the metal seal ring that is on the screw.

Image

Screw the tube assembly into the hole, snug it slightly.

Image

Hold the tube upright as shown and have someone start the engine. Shut the engine off as soon as the tube stops filling.

Image

Line up the top mark with the gasket that separates the carb cover from the main bowl. The gas should be at the lower mark, within
one millimeter up or down.

Image

Drain the gas into a container and dispose of properly. If the gas was out of range of the second mark, follow instructions in the manual
as to how to add shims to the needle valve to make proper changes. Check again.

Great directions and photos! Thanks. I'll make one of these soon as part of getting ready for my spring turn-up.

Cheers, Clive

Rather than drilling out a bolt, many of us have used a brake bleeder instead. As shown here: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=6054&hilit=carb+gauge

My post is geared towards the frugal Pinz owner, there's no shortage of them. Personally, I like the Porsche version of the gauge.

:?: :?: No, the Mega-frugal Pinz owner. :!:
I'm seeing bleeders online for as low as $3, and I got mine from my local NAPA for about a buck. I thought that was being frugal.

I wish I had known about the bleeders, that would make a lot more sense. The 7 X 1.0 is not a common thread.
