Dash fasteners

I am having trouble with my dash fasteners, the 5 little quarter turn things. Do not know what you call them. It looks like turning the screw head is supposed to make a rubber grommet swell and grab, but in my case the whole thing just turns. I bought some new pieces and they just turn too. I just tried a little contact cement between the rubber and the dash panel and have had partial luck. Any suggestions?

I've successfully used rubber well nuts with machine screws of your choice.

They are a pain yes.
For some, not all 5, after you inserted them, you can reach the rubber cap and hold it with one finger while you turn the screw with your other hand.

And I think you can "pre-compress" the rubber before inserting it, just so that they fit tightly and slip less after when you turn the screw.

It's wild to see so many components and complexity just for a fastener, especially on a Pinz. Don't know who designed them, but surely did not know about "the best part is no part" :D

I got all 5 in and snug, holding them from the back as suggested.

The new ones came with a plastic “nose” but no clear way to keep it attached so I did not use them. Any insights?

I also lost some of the noses, purpose of the shape not clear.
